I have a 1999 Explorer with the 4.0L SOHC engine. The metal power steering line from the PS cooler to the steering rack rusted and was leaking. I cut off the line and used a socket to take off the fitting.

The problem is getting the new fitting back on. Is there some trick to get the fitting on. I attached the rubber hose to the PS cooler line, but I find it impossible to get the fitting thread started. I have tried from underneath, from the side, and from the top but there is just no room for a wrench and fingers anywhere. I have tried a crowfoot and still can not get enough access to get the threads started into the steering rack valve. The cooler mounting bolts are well rusted so i can not remove them with out destroying the cooler as noted in another post. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is just really tight in there, and I recall removing the cooler (no help for you due to the rust). Only thing I can think of is it has to be perfectly straight going in, so maybe disconnect the rubber side til you get the threads started.

Has anyone actually replaced this power steering line without removing the PS cooler?
