It has the 4.0 engine at 160,000 miles. everytime i start it up it sounds like it wants to stall and will cut out for a second and then idles. anyone have any idea what could be making this act like that. Also when its idling it just will sound funny as it idles like it goes low then high like its gasping for air and just doesnt seem to idle right either any ideas

Is it an OHV or OHC?

Condition of plugs and wires? Last time you cleaned the MAF,throttle body and injectors? :D

x2 but also how dirty is the air filter and clean the iac valve

ya your engines shot, time for a crate.... haha just kidding.

seriously though, run some injector cleaner, change the air filter, clean the maf and iac, and change plugs/ wires if they are old, also you could clean the throttle body out a little.

my '99 Explorer Sport (Manual Transmission) does the same thing sometimes, so most of this information has been really helpfull, but what do maf & iac stand for? Sorry I'm a girl, I've learned how to change my own brakes, but there is SO much more for me to learn, also how do I know if it's OHV or OHC??

IAC stands for AIR IDLE CONTROL

MAF stands for MASS AIR FLOW

If you have a V6 it's either a SOHC (single Over Head Cam) or OHV (over head Valve)

Open the hood and check what it says on the plastic cover. Does it say SOHC?

If not, then it's an OHV

Another way is to check the 8th vin# if it's an E then it's the SOHC

Thank you everyone, that is very helpful, (will a tune up help at all?) I hope I can get back to this thread when I get home and can check since my ES is currently sitting in the garage with a snapped e-brake/foot brake (I am trying to find a post on here to find out if I can replace the cord or if I have to replace the whole mechanism as I've been told)
