Programming a Transfer Shift Control Module?

I read on a thread here that a guy took his 2001 Sport Trac to the dealer for a new "Transfer Shift Control Module" (Ford part # TM 101) and it was $231 for the module and $115 to program it. DO THESE THINGS REALLY NEED TO BE PROGRAMMED, or is it possible to pick one up off ebay and stick it in myself. Btw, mine is an '01 too.

Ditto, they are pulling your leg. The 90's 4WD systems, which runs through the 1st gen Sport Tracs, has modules that handle 4WD, the GEM, 4WD, and TOD modules to be specific. Those are plug and play for the matching model generations. So you cannot use a 95-97 GEM module in the Sport Trac. But I believe the 4WD and TOD module should be the same from 95 through the last of the Sport Trac, and the 2003 Sport.
