Programming new key for 2017 Limited

I tried searching but could not find confirmation of this.

I read somewhere that the 16+ explorer keys could not be programmed by individuals and only by dealers or specialized locksmiths.

Could anyone confirm this? The dealer is having a key programmed for me on their dime (used car only came with 1) but I asked about getting a 3rd key just as a spare. They want $170 for it.

I'm pretty sure I could do much better online.

You can program it yourself...I programmed a 3rd key for my 2018 Sport.

If you are showing 3 admin keys, but only have 2...you’ll have to visit the dealer for them to remove the lost key from your programming. To program a new key you need all of the original keys in the vehicle.

The car shows 2 admin keys. I only have 1.

The dealership is sending a mobile locksmith to give me a 2nd key. I don't know how they do it.

But I hope they remove the old one. I wonder if I can do this in Forscan.

Then in the future I can do a 3rd key myself
