The clear coat on my EB is toast and I'm not going to lay out the cash for a top notch repaint. Estimates came back close to 2k. So that left me with limited options.

Macco or primer....... That is until I saw some military vehicles on display for a 4th of July party. Fireworks went off in my head and Project Army Bauer was born.

It is going to take a while but you can follow along at:

hank, i like that look.... then your teuck would kinda look like bill's truck....then you could be *********

I think you oughtta just herculine the whole thing. Shouldn't be more then two gallons worth, about $200, and you know it'll last for years and years and protect you from and door dings, etc. :)

Jimabena,

Thanks. Do you have a link to a photo of Bill's Ex? I want to make sure I am not copying someone's idea and hard work. hg

Thanks, looks like I'll be ok. That is a cool ride.

I'm going a dark green and desert tan following the original EB patten.

Matt, ya beat me to it. That was gonna be my suggestion :) I saw some paint that would definintely make it stand out. Rustoleum now has some paint that has a marbled finish that is supposed to hide some surface imperfections.

an OD & tan X will be cool, but i think its more Bananna Republic than Eddie Bauer.

Are you doing this rattle can? Where did you find the paint to do it? I have been looking but can't find the OD green! I want to paint lots of things with it. :D

Yup, going the rattle can and color sanding route. Stuff sprays quite nicely

I did a bunch of research on military vehicle restoration sites. Most recommend Aevroe Pacific

Found the paint at: www.aervoe.com

The color chart on the web and in their catalog is not even close. (They say that also)

Best bet is to call them and get the name of a local distributor. Buy all the greens and tan and do your own testing. My distributor is an Army Navy store in Lakeland.

After the first round of purchases I am leaning towards the Marine Corps Green (see my web link) The Woodland green was too light.

However I just received all the other OD's and greens today. Will start putting samples on the roof and decide on a color from there.

Figure about 3.99 per can. Prices negotiable when you buy in bulk.

Right now my combo is Marine Green and Sand.

Good luck.

I took the Aervoe color chart to the paint shop and had them match the O.D. called Field Drab. It cost me $200 and that included upgrading to acrylic paint. If you go with spray paint, it will scratch off very easily.

Hank and Ryan, you should both go for it. I LOVE O.D.!

i've found Olive Drab and Tan rattlecans at Wal-Mart for 99¢ each... they don't always seem to stock it, but you might ask.

Hello Rangerx

The Aervoe chart is not even close to what they put in the can's (it is a joke. The girl at Aervoe said the same thing.). I received my second shipment of colors yesterday and all the OD's were more on the brown side.

The field drab almost looked like moldy coffee. (real heavy on the brown) On the chart it looks like what we would expect. The marine corps green looks black on the chart but is more OD (heavier on the green) when on the Ex. See the test sparys on the link below.

As far as scratching easy, yes I agree that a normal rattle can paint does scratch. The Aervoe stuff it tough as hell though...

At least on my monitor at home and in the office my test sprays look real close to the actual color. See the link below and compare it to your old chart. You'll get a laugh.

Final colors after testing are:
992 Marine Corps Green
988 Black
977 Sand

I love the idea! One thing, instead of replacing the EB logos with the original stickers you should go all out and retag it as an Army Bauer, using the black and painting it on with stencils (the way the military i.d.'s their trucks)

P.S. It needs a gun rack with a couple Mini-14's in the rear window. J/K I love the idea.

That's a great idea! Can't beleive I missed that....

Ok, slight change in plans...

RangerX, after talking to an friend who owns a body shop I now understand what you meant by "scratch off easy" It really does not scratch off but it gets marked up at the slightest touch. Especially when it's hot.

I'm not a paint guy but my friend started talking about hardeners and catalyists and gave me a list of things (item numbers and compatible products) to ask from arevoe.

For safety and based on your suggestion, I am going to have my friends shop squirt the truck. I'll be swinging by his shop sometime this week to chat with him on what he wants me to do for the advanced prep work.

In general here is the latest status on the project:

Bumpers are coming from Kris G. He should get the check today.

Thought I had a trade for a black grill, until the kid backed out.....That is AFTER! I shipped the damn grill out...

Couple of guys are interested in my pushbar and or bumpers and are sorting out a black grill or trade options.

I should have the rims in Sept.

My sign guy can do the "Army Bauer" logos.

Will keep you posted.

Quick update

Here is the latest.

Bumpers are in transit.

Rims installed.

Still looking for a grill but Rick says he found a two stage paint to finish it in black. (Sending info)

Picked up the paint today and have a choice to make. They did not add the flatening agent to the paint. This means it is normal auto gloss. Pro side is I can wax and buff it in case of damage. (can't with flat) Will also look a little more socially acceptable. Con is it is not flat and oboxious... I can take it back and have them add the agent at no charge. Going to do some test sprays. Looking for your guys feedback.

This weekend I yanked the running boards, air-dam, added the rims and fixed the grill/bumper after the great swamp towing incident.

Here is a current shot

Jimabena74,

I originally was going to use the paint from Arevoe but found out it is a synthetic enamel. My paint guy told me it would be really soft even with the hardiner added.

I had a choice between PPG and Omni and chose the Omni paint. Had the color mixed at a local auto paint supply house. Chose the Omni as it is an single stage paint. (no clear coat) Expensive as hell though..1 gal green, 1 gal tan, reducer, hardniner and wax/contaminent remover set me back 254.00 this am...

Seriously thought about the rattle can but although the color was what I wanted the paint from Aervoe sprayed really bad and stayed soft.. I would always be spraying something on the truck had I gone that route..

Still leaning to the flat but if you get a mark. stain, scratch you are stuck with it.. (if you buff flat you get bad colored gloss) If I leave the gloss I can buff trail scars out... Jury is still out though..
