...Celly and 35Remmy, any updates on your steering issues???

A local mechanic diagnosed my problem as pump related and said he'd install one, and if that didn't get rid of the whine, he'd remove it and not charge me. Let's just say, it was no charge.

He then insisted it was my alternator, but I didn't buy that because the whine was there before I put in an aftermarket alternator. That being said, I can see why someone would think that because the sound seemed to come from the alternator when you put a stethoscope on it.

I had him change out my idler and tensioner pulleys, which are both right under the alternator of course. That did the trick. Not sure which pulley was making all the racket, but I'm so happy to finally have my Ex sound like it's supposed to.

This all went down a few months back. I didn't see you ask me the question until today. :D

...Just an update...:D

...I took the X out to Pismo last weekend...The AGR worked flawlessly...Out on the dunes in the deep sand, 10# tires, and the Aussie up front, I could turn on a dime...I couldn't even tell I had a locker up front...:biggthump:

...I need to do some repairs first, and then test it out on the rocks...

how much more psi does this pump put out over stock?

...Izwack could probably better answer that question...

...I personally couldn't find the stock pump info...:(

yea i cant either but my pump wines like a baby with these 33s and im about to put my 35 on so i need to upgrade to something.looks like this is the only pump they really even make with out changing alot.

I had a PS fluid leak for awhile that had just gotten worse. I replaced the whole system. Pump, hoses, and the Box. Nothing fancy, but it did the trick. I will say though that those hoses can be a ***** to get to unless you move the AC.
I didn't wanna tamper with the frion lines, so I just lifted it and hung it on the hood:D

There's also a little dust boot in between where the gear connects onto the box that i ended up tearing. It got in the way of the pickle fork tool i used to get the box off. A new ones like $5 at most auto supply stores. needs to be lubed though.
Nice write-up!

...Here is a bump for the guys looking for power steering pump info...:D

This should be a sticky with a slight title change as a power steering guide =]

...I originally was going to title it "How To =" instead of "Project X =" but I think there was already a "How to" done...:dunno"

..If a mod wants to change it that will be ok...;)

Just got paid today and it's time order a new pump. Few questions though... First, what is the core? How do I know if I need a new one? And do they make an AGR pump for a 2nd gen? I went on Autozone's website and they do not appear to have it in stock if it exists.

I dont think you can get an AGR pump because you have the SOHC. A core is your old pump. Thats the core part that they keep and rebuild and resell. If you don't give them the old one, you are charged a core fee, because now they have to go find another pump.

If you want an upgraded pump, this is one of that paths you could follow. It's also the only path that I know of ;) http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190649&highlight=power+steering+pump

Awesome thanks!

I wrote this and the conclusion is that, as INH stated, the SOHC's pump cant be boosted. But unless you're pushing 35" tires or larger, there really is no need for an upgraded/boosted pump. In other words, I'm sure any stock replacement will work just fine. We have plenty of people running 33"s on the stock pump.

...Bumpin for the how to bleed info...;)

...I am looking to get another one of these but I will have to start searching again locally as it appears Autozone no longer sells these AGR pumps...:(

I"m doing a complete steering replacement, as everything from the gearbox to the intermediate shaft is KO'ed. I think I drove her a bit hard.

For Prices and parts:

I couldn't find an AGR pump locally, but Summit Racing had it for 129.95, and a new pulley for 8.95.

New lines and 4 quarts of Royal Purple cost 65.96 from NAPA.

And I ended up getting a Flaming River Steering Shaft (PT# FR1518-1DD) for $270.00

So far the hardest part was getting the Drop Pitman Arm off of the damned gearbox. Torches FTW. I'm running a 93 xlt with the tilt wheel and auto tranny, so if i run into any freaky problems, I'll post them and my 'solutions' here.

~and thanks for all the great info and pics! This has been a huge help. :D
