guys, im thinking of getting rid of my exhaust and going back to stock. i have a high flow, low noise muffler (i dont know what brand) with custom bent 2.5" tubes, and the noise is really annoying the hell out of me - ive had it on for about 10 or 11 weeks (i do a lot of highway driving, too.)

are the benefits of an aftermarket exhaust that great, that i should just deal with the noise or turn up the radio? i mean, i cant really tell a noticeable difference - i get about 20-30 miles more per tank, but i can live without that slight increase to save a few headaches from the noise. performance-wise, its tough to tell a difference - explorers arent speed machines to begin with.

if i go back to stock, i would get a plain old stock muffler with custom 2.25" pipes, and probably a stainless steel tip so you cant see the ugly aluminized pipe.

what do you guys think?

Instead of going back to stock, why not just get a quieter performance muffler. The flowmaster I had on my '92 wasn't noticable until you buried the throttle. Cruising on the highway, it was just about the same as the stock. As for performance, my flowie definintely helped in the fuel mileage and the power department. Going up 322 over 7 mountains to State College, I had to start in 4th and drop to 3rd to hold 65 with the stock exhaust. With the flowie, I could start out in 5th and just touch 4th near the top holding 75mph.

I too would definately keep the xustom piping and seek a quiet ( yep, they make em ) muffler.

Good luck....

well, heres the deal guys: im actually on my 3rd exhaust system. when i had it installed, there were some complications (i.e.: not fitting correctly, too loud), so i told the guy to just put on a stock muffler. when i picked it up that day, he said he didnt put on a stock muffler, he didnt want me to lose any power just because i couldnt take the noise. so he put on a high flow, low noise muffler, and compared to what was previously on there (the system that i said said earlier was too loud - i think it was dynomax or cherry bomb or something like that), its extremely quiet. but now im getting used to it, and its annoying - so i guess he gave me the quietest one he had besides stock. its not that i want one thats "low noise", i think i want one thats "quiet", like the stock one.

id like to get some more opinions before i make my final decision.

by the way, jeff, seven mountains is ***** to drive up no matter what exhaust you have, hehe. just gotta get a good running start up that 6% grade (yup, its only 6%, the highest road grade allowable in the state - i guess i did learn something in college :p )

Any muffler besides stock will be louder. Did they take the resonator off the truck? It's like a round type of muffler after the stock muffler. This is used to quiet the sound. If it's not there anymore, you could go to a junk yard, & see if you can buy one, & have the shop weld it on. Or maybe add a new one. If the noise is so bad, try some sound deading stuff, like Dynomat.

I got a Flowmaster 50, single in and single out and driving at highway speeds you can't even hear the exhaust, unless you floor it.

I really do recommend the Flowmaster 50 if you want awesome sound when you want it and have it quiet when you don't.

Does the resonator cause restriction? Or does it only deaden the sound a little?

would i get the same result if i put a resonator on my aftermarket exhaust and i would if i put the stock exhaust back on? (when i say stock, i dont mean the original system, just a plain stock muffler with new piping.)

You could soundproof your X with foam or Dynamat. Or Pergo Silent Step that goes under hardwood floors. I know this thanks to ACBlessing:D

well, i dont really wanna have to make other mods to deaden the sound, id rather just get rid of it. for now its staying on, for lack of $. ill probably take it off by the end of the summer, i guess its just not for me.

if anyone would be interested in this muffler (cheap, probably like $20 plus shipping), let me know, otherwise ill just tell the guy at meineke to chuck it (i dont know what brand i just know that it is high flow, low noise.)

also, whats everyones experience with stainless steel tips? do they ever rust, corrode, rot, etc.? if i get my exhaust redone, im gonna put one on; even if i leave my aftermarket exhaust on, ill porbably get one anyway.

Any idea what muffler it is??? I might be interested!!!

jeff,

i have no idea what brand it is. when i get home (im at work now) i can look on the receipt from meineke. i remember i looked at the receipt before to see what brand the muffler was, and i didnt recognize the name. ill post later as to what brand it is.

ok, the receipt just says, "prof. plus", which i assume means, 'professional plus?'
