I'm looking to buy a 2017 or 2018 Limited. I don't really like the idea of having an SUV which doesn't have a trailer hitch for accessories and small trailers. I know that aftermarket hitches can be bought and installed, although it wouldn't be hidden away like the OEM tow package, and I also understand that the tow package includes other drivetrain mods (eg transmission cooling).

What exactly is included in a tow package?

Also, If I get the 4cyl Ecoboost, what is the tow capacity WITH and WITHOUT the class II tow package? In other words, is it futile to attempt to tow anything without at least the Class II package?

These questions have been asked several times in various threads. If you use the Forum's handy 'Search' feature (upper right) you will find some of these posts.
No specs have yet been released on the 2018. As for the 2017, the Sport and Platinum have the Class III tow package included as standard equipment.
The Explorers with the factory tow package have a different transmission and a trailer sway button on the dash. They come with the wiring (4 & 7 pin), a more robust rad according to some, oil cooler and a cooling duct. The cooling duct also incorporates a cutout in the left side of the front bumper valance. A picture is posted in one of the threads. Also, with aftermarket installations the rated towing capacity is no more than 2000 lbs, even with a class III hitch.

As for towing capacity here is a PDF link from the Ford.com website;
