The other day I was test driving my Mom's explorer because of the O/D light flashing. Supposedly, when the O/D light is flashing, the over drive is disabled and the transmission is in limp mode. I counted the gears from a dead stop up to 45 and noticed that it shifted in all 4 gears. I used my Matco scanner to pull codes but there were none in regards to the transmission. I came across a thread here about reseting the O/D light and so I disconnected the battery for an hour and reconnected it to see if it worked. It did and so test drove it again. I counted the speeds from a dead stop again and noticed this time that there were a total of 5 speeds. I was surprised because I didn't think Ford made a 5 speed auto until recently. I looked up the specs on the truck on this board and found that Ford did indeed make a 5-speed auto for the Explorer but not until 1997. Has anybody else here with a 1995 Explorer ever counted there shifts from a dead stop? There will be 3 shifts for a four speed and 4 shifts for a 5 speed naturally. Just to be sure I wasn't imagining things, I counted the shifts again this time with the O/D switched off and I counted 4 speeds.

you may be counting the converter locking up as a gear change

^ what he said. You are likely feeling the converter locking and counting it as a shift.

All I can say is that when I turn off the O/D and count the shifts from a stop, I count 3 which after the 3rd shift, it is in 4th gear. When I turn it back on and perform the test again, I count 4 shifts which after the 4th would be 5th gear. Here is the run down.

O/D off: From a stop it is in 1st gear, rpms climb and it shifts into second(first shift), then it shifts into 3rd(second shift), and then into 4th(third shift).

O/D on: From a stop in 1st gear, I rpms climb and it shifts into second(first shift), then into 3rd(second shift), then into 4th(third shift), and when it climbs to 40 MPH it shifts into 5th(fourth shift).

Does the transmission have a lockup for 3rd gear also? If so then that would explain why if feels like a shift into 4th when it is actually locking up in 3rd.

Can you do something for me and try an experiment. Try the same as I did and count the shifts from a dead stop first with the O/D off and then again with it on and tell me what you get.

Thanks

Matt

Flashing O.D. light

I recently just rebuilt my transmission and the o.d. light started flashing until I fixed the speedometer sensor. Now the light doesn't flash anymore. However when I drive it in neighborhoods no matter how long it stays off, BUT if I drive it down the interstate for about 10 minutes then get off and come to a complete stop, when I try and take off again the light starts flashing. I take out my battery for 5 minutes put it back in and the light stays off UNTIL I drive down the interstate again. Could this be a result of my transmission not cooling properly? If so how do you suggest I check to see if it's cooling properly. Also someone mentioned to me that after the transmission was rebuilt in put back in I might need synchronize or collaborate it??? Please let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.
