Question on a code

I ran a test for codes on my 93 Explorer 4.0. Code 538 came up, Invalid cylinder balance test due to CID circuit failure. The engine has lost power and runs bad. What would you check first?

According to my code list, KOER 538 is from a failure to perform the "goose" test. The first thing I'd check is your code list to make sure that it is reliable. Then, review the test protocol and repeat the KOER test, making sure to goose the throttle when prompted. If needed, we have a couple of threads here that describe the test procedure.
