I was wondering how hard it would be to install a 2010 mustang 4.0 engine into a 2001 Sport Trac since they are both 4.0 SOHC engines. And also if the swap works, would aftermarket mustang parts such as a cold air intake be able to be installed into the sport Trac afterwards?

A Ford 4.0L SOHC is a Ford 4.0L SOHC. It doesn't matter which Ford car it came in. The is no difference between the long blocks, other than the 4WD Explorer/Mountaineer/Sport Trac engines have a balance shaft where the 2WD Explorer/Mountaineer/Sport Trac and Mustang engines don't have the balance shaft. The balance shaft is not important and can be used in a 2WD and a non-balance shaft engine can be used in a 4x4.

If you're thinking the Mustang 4.0L SOHC engine is of higher performance... It is not. To put an engine out of a Mustang in an Explorer you will need to swap over all the peripheral parts from one long block to the other.

BTW - Cold air intakes do nothing other than make more noise and oiled "performance" air filters (like K&N) tend to foul your MAF sensor and IMO don't filter dirt as well as a high quality paper filter. You Explorer already has a "cold air intake". It does not draw air from the hot engine compartment.

Cold air intake does nothing unless you do other bigger mods
