Hey guys

last night when i was coming home from hanging out with some friends. When i was pulling up to the driveway my explorer completely shut off on me. And it wouldnt start after the 4th try it finally started so does that mean i need to get a new battery or something else.

And then also sometimes when i shut off my explorer it makes a lot churp noise not that much just once in awhile I am wondering what is making that noise as well.

last question on my steering wheel what does rsm and set accell and coast mean as well.

thnx guys

Set accel- once you hit the on button for cruise control, you hit that button to "set' your CC. RSM- is the resume button, once you hit the brakes to disengage the CC, you can hit that button to resume your CC speed. Coast- means just that, if your CC is set at a speed, you hit coast and its like taking your foot off the gas-you coast.

thnx mike

do u know whats the issue bout my sport just shutting off on me when i pulled up into the driveway.

and the churping noise u know anything bout that as well

I'd be gessing but it sounds like it may have to to with the air intake, maybe the maf sensor is dirty or even your filter. Check the inexpensive things first. Maybe someone with a similar problem will chime in. Good luck bro...

Sam, what sort of maintenance do you do? We never really hear about you doing anything to your truck except turning it into a pigsty and smoking big stogies in it. :D

When was the last time you:

-changed the plugs and/or wires?

-cleaned the MAF or IAC?

-changed the fuel filter?

-run Seafoam through your gas and/or vacuum lines?

These are just to start. I'm sure others will have ideas, but as the other guy said....start with the cheap stuff. You know as anyone that there are a lot of threads in the archives on all sorts of things Explorer. Maybe the search tool will be your friend too. :p:

thnx guys i give it a shot anyone else got any ideas

Definitely do a tune-up on your Ex. If nothing else, it will at least give you better performance once you find your main problem. Did your car completely die on you (engine shut off, lights off, accessories off), or did the car stall and the lights and other accessories still on? If it's just the engine, then it could be air flow problem in the air intake. Check for a leak in the hoses. Thats my advice. Hope it helps.

I had a similar problem with my 99 XLT. Mine would idle real roughly when I was sitting at stop lights, and sometimes stall out. I checked around for leaks for a while, and eventually found out that one of my vacuum hoses was dry-rotting, and would nearly completely collapse in on itself. I replaced the hose and it worked great. Like I said, if it is an airflow problem, then check for leaks and check the hoses. Just my advice.

My rough guesstimate would be the fuel filter.

my headlights were still on just the whole car shut off completely but it turned back on after 4th start up.

i am going to go outside in a bit to see if she starts up fine now. if not then i am screwed cause i have to work tommorrow.

when i start it up it sounds like its going to die out when it starts up and then it sounds fine after that. do u think maybe i possibly will need to get a new battery or get it tested out.

How many miles on your fuel filter? Sounds fuel related to me.

mileage on my car is 93,321 miles on it

Couldn't hurt to do the fuel filter because your symptoms were almost like what I experienced a few weeks ago. Fuel filter replacement seems to have solved my problem. Bad gas is also a possibility. My car suffered from it. Have you gassed up somewhere different lately? Mine always runs like crap after a road trip these days. "Home Cooked" gas always makes the symptoms go away for my truck.

As for the chirping sound. I don't have a clue. Explorers make a lot of chirping, ticking, clicking etc etc etc sounds. Get a soundclip up.

i try to get sound clip

the x almost shut off on me again tonight like when i was going to the store.

i hope nothing happens when i am about to go to work tommorrow cause i start at 12:45pm and i am off at 8:45pm.

but otherwise then that happy labor day to everyone in this forum
