I have narrowed down my transmission problem to either a bad OD servo, or a broken band. I am sure there is servo bore wear, as it has 135,000 miles. Last night on the way home from work, I lost OD in a stiff headwind. I was going highway speeds (65) and the tach was at 3000 instead of 2000. Hence OD out.
Further testing today has led me to believe I have no OD function, due to one of the two above malfunctions. I am leaning to a failed band, due to the relatively rapid onset of symptoms. Shifting has been firm, but consistent the entire time I have owned the vehicle. After all that, here is my question:
Is driving the vehicle going to do any further damage, or more likely to leave me stranded than an otherwise healthy 5R55W would? There is odd shifting due to no OD band function, but no slippage, and other than higher than normal cruising RPM, there does not appear to be any ill effects. It will be rebuilt eventually, and I will speak to the technician about the servo issues in the next month or two, but I cannot afford to not drive.
Thanks,
Doug
