Part of the time it runs perfectly. Part of the time it's randomly misfiring and surging and getting bad gas mileage.

What's been changed so far.
Injectors, plugs, wires, IAC, EGR valve and pipe (had a crack), EGR pressure sensor, TPS, coils (just put new Motorcraft ones on), timing chain and sprockets, catalytic converters and O2 sensors, fuel pump and filter, refurbished ECM flashed to last update.

Replacing the EGR valve and pipe helped the most, before changing that it had a constant 0175 error (and randomly too rich/too lean codes for both banks) and dumped gas through it like a toilet.

So what else can be alternately and randomly flipping between working properly, and badly? Can the crank trigger sensors become intermittently bad?

NO CODES SET despite running like it's only firing about half the time when it's misbehaving. It did one time set a code for cylinder 4 misfire, after I ran seafoam through it to see if that might help it's problem. It din't, but I did put new factory specified platinum tip plugs in after the Seafoam treatment.

Since then no check engine light and never any codes set.
