My 98 XLT SOHC has 207K on it and has developed a problem that happens at random times and under random conditions. Most recently I was backing out of my driveway and just started moving with RPM under 2K and the noise happened. It sounds like an electric motor winding up to a high RPM, from the inside of the car it sounds like it is coming from the front left area. I lost power in reverse. Once I took the vehicle out of gear the noise went away and if I bumped up the RPM to over 2K the noise went away. It does this about 2-3 times then goes away for a few weeks. In previous situations I was in town driving and slowed to a stop and once below about 2K the noise occured. Other than this random noise everything else is fine. Any ideas to fix this would be great. There are no codes on the OBD scanner.
