A friend of mine’s 1935 Seagrave fire engine that I’ve driven a few times. Has both timing adjustment and idle control levers in the middle of the steering wheel. Brakes are controlled by both the pedal and a lever by the shifter. Makes parade driving easy!

I wish I had pictures of my friends 67 C10 truck he swapped a Nissan SD33 diesel into. He sold it last year cause the engine needed work and he couldn't buy the parts. It had a throttle knob on the dash he would turn to adjust the idle speed. He mentioned that wasn't exactly legal in his truck.

I have one like this in the Pumpkin. Helps when rock crawling with a manual transmission.

The one in my friends truck was a rotary knob that also worked the fuel cutoff. He'd push it in, start the truck then give it a few turns to ramp the idle up till the motor quit smoking, then he'd drive off. Pull it out and the motor would die.

^ Modern tech makes getting anywhere easy now.

^ To blend in with the locals better, I installed this while I was there.

^ Local artwork in Fairbanks.

^ Except for Whitehorse, Yukon is a pretty desolate place.

^ Just beginning the actual Alaska Highway drive with 329k on the odometer. No breakdowns (not even a flat), although I did get a broken windshield. Probably the best road-trip of my life so far...ten days there and ten days back. Spent six full weeks in AK, although I decided not to drive the Dalton Highway...too extreme/remote, even for me...plus it looked a bit boring, to tell the truth.

^ Oil change time, plus new rear brakes, and then heading south for the first time in a long while.

Once the road has ice on it, I'll consider driving my semi truck there.

"The Ice Road", nice! It's actually at its smoothest in the winter. Make sure your heater operates well.

The reasons for doing it in the winter, just like how the shifter and clutch weeds out the people who think they can drive a truck, the ice weeds out the fair weather drivers. Rates are also better when nobody wants to run a specific lane. due to bad weather. I carry propane heaters if the truck quits, they have saved my ass in Nebraska and Wyoming when it gets down to -20 and the air dryer's alcohol cartridge turns to ice.

Nice, you sure won't catch me there in the winter!

I’d be happy to go on a winter rescue
Mission ;)

Elevators and escalators are the safest mode of transportation
even with flying manhole covers

But when they fail… they fail spectacularly!!
I have two things to tell you when it comes to getting Killed by an elevator or escalator:

1. If you get stuck in an elevator do not try to self rescue!
People are usually
Killed between floors… “hey you guys it looks like we can pry these doors open a little and crawl out of here!” And then when you are halfway over the threshold… the elevator Moves and you are cut in half

Elevator rescues are done by personnel
By either
Getting it to the next/bottom floor and opening the doors
Or
Through the emergency hatch in the ceiling always hidden) the hatch is opened from the outside (top of car) because people are stupid and will elevator surf or again, attempt self rescue

2. When riding an escalator do like the warning sign says and hold the handrails

especially when riding with your kids. Each step is designed to hold about 450# and it rides on 2 bearings. If the bearings are not lubricated or maintained they can fail, the step folds and you drop into the escalator chassis, which looks much like a meat grinder

Anyone ever ride escalators or elevators in buildings that look like they need some
Upkeep?
Well chances are good the elevator and escalator Maintenance is lacking($$$$$) and possible safeties are already being bypassed by the local slumlord or maintenance workers

I take the stairs instead of the escalator many times.

I’ve basically read and studied every article about elevator and escalator accidents for the last 30 years+
Part of our business is expert witness in elevator Litigation cases…

Still very rare considering how many people they move daily

I've watched videos of elevators and escalators failing in China. Here one second and a memory the next. People are scared of the gap at the end eating a shoelace, in China the entire end opened up and swallowed a lady. She was able to toss her baby to safety before she met her fate. I take the stairs whenever possible.

Otis did not invent the elevator
He invented the modern elevator safety
Just a little factoid

Found this interesting, it was in the same shape back in January. This is the escalator at the east economy lot at the phx airpo

Replacing the guts! Very cool

Probably waiting on parts from China

You can see the nylon lubricator tray and bottle…the tensioner is at the top landing the drive motor
Is usually at the bottom
Landing (pit)
There are big chains that everything is driven from and they are
Lubed as they come around at the top landing.

We had a job at the la
Convention center where the cleaning crew was using power washer and degreaser at the top landing to clean the escalators… not smart

We did an inspection because the handrails had so much static charged up they were shocking people…..we inspected several units and we recommend they shut them down immediately when we saw the insides… later we found out about the de greasing cleaner janitor crew…
That could have killed somebody.
Can’t use degreaser to clean an escalator!!!!

Finally cracking down on the smash and grab shoplifters.
