1994 Explorer xlt
my ex is a 94 xlt. ive been wondering for awhile about some things that are different on my explorer than anyone elses on here that ive seen. some of that may be due to me living in california where emissions are ridiculous, but we will see.
1. i have a stock wire cluster and plug running up under the hood with nothing attatched. looks almost like i could put a hood light under there or something.

2. i have what looks like an extra front lights wiring cluster thats just tied up under the drivers side headlight.

3. i have this weird set of pipes sticking up on the drivers side headers that seem to feed back into the upper intake and vaccuum tree

4. on the stock air inlet under the battery theres a weird offshoot of flexible hose that is deadend clamped to the passenger side header. like the air is just being vented back away from the airbox.

5. i have a whole extra set of hoses comeing from the heater core to the water pump and lower intake connected with a tree. most everyone else just has straight hoses, one in and one out.

none of these things are in the haynes manual, i was hoping im not the only one.

thanks!

1 is a hood light. Put a bulb in it...194 bulb type
2 is likely the wiring for Fog lights that came as an option on limited models
3 is the EGR system, 94 change
4 is part of the stock air intake system. It's designed to heat up the air more quickly in cold weather by bringing heat up from the header. It's an emissions thing & it's pretty useless in realty.
5 is a heater bypass valve. It's designed to cut off the coolant flow into the heater core when your using the AC. It was a 94 change.
These all actually are common.

Jason nailed it. The valve that diverts the heat (for #4 ) is controlled by a vacuum switch. The switch is underneath the air filter cover. You'll see two vacuum lines for the switch going into the aft side of the cover.

It's more or less a "good idea" that wasn't.
