1997 Explorer XLT 4.0 OHV
Hello,

First post here so if I leave any details out please ask. I have a 97 AWD Explorer with the 4.0 OHV Engine, and I've been struggling to figure out what's wrong with it.
It randomly shuts off while the RPM's are low. It will do it when slowly approaching a stop light, or while just sitting at the red light. It does not idle like crap, it idles and runs just fine. Sometimes I can go 80 miles without it shutting off once, other times it shuts off 6 times each time I stop at a light which makes me think sensor.

When it dies, it does not typically bog down it just turns itself off as if you turned the key off. Occasionally, while idling, it will do 1 quick stutter as if it goes to shut off, but then around 2-300RPM it just quickly returns to normal. This issue occurs when in park, driving, or neutral. Every time it shuts off, it can be restarted without fail very easily. Sometimes, it will die again right after restart, sometimes it waits a few seconds to die again, or sometimes it's good for the remainder of the drive.

Sometimes, while driving at any speed it will thud one time, almost like it wants to shut off but cannot because you're giving it throttle. This is less frequent. The truck shows no codes except for one P1451 EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid code that has been there for a long while (haven't got around to it yet).

A couple of weeks ago it begun not starting in the mornings when it was cold outside. To get it started i had to give it throttle and try many times. Had spark, and cranked perfectly normally. The truck has a brand new (less than 4 month old) Battery. Charging system test is all good. I replaced the DFPE sensor, The TPS sensor, and Crankshaft position sensor. After changing the Crankshaft sensor, I no longer experienced the startup issue in the morning but the random shut off issue still remains.

I tested the fuel pressure at it read a consistent 35. The MAF was cleaned, and so was the throttle body. Some other things that were recently replaced about 2 years ago (but only 4k miles ago) were the fuel filter, plugs, and wires. This is because the truck sat for about 2 years. The EGR Valve was replaced this year. The truck has 200,000 miles on it, runs and drives great, and has great service records. After fixing some things on it I have driven it almost every day for about 6 months with no issue until this problem started happening.

Before replacing/cleaning anything I said above, My first thought was IAC. I did not remove the IAC, or replace it, but i did unplug it while it was running and it went from running great to struggling to idle which indicated the sensor at least works. I felt that this could not be my issue, because of the jolt that happens when driving it.

I do not know what to try next, maybe somebody here can point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Sometimes a failing CAM sensor will not throw a code right away.....one possibility....but it sounds like it's happened enough to where it would at this point. Maybe check for any frayed wiring near this or other components...maybe critter chewed on something and a wire's barely making contact....cuts in and out.....long shot but.....

Its sound like a failing CPU( ECM). Might be losing 5v reference signal. That would effect a all the item you cleaned or replace. Failing cap inside the ECU.
You have no code.
You remove the ECM and open the covers and visually inspect the capacitors.

You need to use a scanner, that shows live data.

I support all suggestions listed thus far.

Thank you all for the replies. I will try looking at the ECM. As far as live data goes, I have monitored it for awhile and everything seems to be in normal range as far as MAF values and such.

Keep A eye on the reference voltage. Should 5 volts. If you mother or is low than the 5v. That will throw all the sensors off.
