ok i have been going to the svt website for sometime now to get some more ideas for building cars for horsepower in general. so i hear this one dude is from the same town as i am. so i go message him in yahoo and ask him about his supercharger(powerdyne xb-1a) and what he thinks about it. well he tells me he likes it and stuff and that they have mustang runs at this local casino by my place. by the way he didnt know i had an explorer and not a mustang yet. so he says i should come by. well after he finds out i am an explorer he asks what kind of horsepower i am going for. i tell him 450-500 rwhp after 347 and everything is in and tuned. he starts naming off some things i should do. well being that i already have a plan and am going to stick to it i kind of just listened and let it go out my other ear so as not to offend him. then i tell him it has already been done and even faster than i want to go by some guy down in florida(TROLL) i tell him that he will either be breaking 10's here soon or breaking axles. lol. well it seemed like after that he just shut down and didnt even believe me. i was like man i got the link to his website if ya want it. by then he was offline. so i dont know if the dude is going to look at it or not. i know we have suv's that are not meant for speed and all and weigh 4400 ish pounds but if you can mod a civic to 1000 horsepower how hard is it to believe that a 5.0 explorer which has a ton more torque to begin with to be able to reach over 500 rwhp? i mean he wasnt direspectfull but it still gets to me when people think that there IS NO WAY EXPLORERS CAN GO FAST. there may be alot of posers out there but Troll isnt one of them. maybe i am overreacting but it still gets to me. well here is my rant. good day.

yeh.. i tellpeople of troll all the time.. they usually cant believe it but once they see his site.. they freak out..
the civics that are 9 second cars are gutted with over 100 grand in engine work. if u put 100 grand in an explorer.. u should be able to get alot more. i hope ur project goes smoothly and cant wait to see ur results. good luck

hey thanks man. me too. i am fairly confident it will go pretty well. i am usually carefull about things that cost $30,000. man that is weird, as of february i will have put over $12,000 of mods in this. of course $5,000 of it was dvd and rims and tires. well i will post results and info on progress when i get through with it. c ya.

they usually cant believe it but once they see his site...

i still cant believe it!!! that truck is so insane!!

most non-believers are very inexperienced. most guys who have had fast cars for a long time know to watch out for "the sleeper", whatever form it may take. the guy you talked to simply is new to fast cars. he will have to learn his lesson the hard way.;)

James the funny thing is that he seemed pretty well established in the mustang world too. his best time in his stang was like high mid 11's. so all i can gues is that maybe he was mad because he found out there was an explorer that was faster than his almighty car. oh well though i do like theSVT site for the stories and stuff, they do seem to flame people when the people doing the flaming dont know the whole story yet. it seems like that on that website they are mostly paper racers. they never take the driver into account(big mistake). i just want my s/c and NO2 in here with my shift kit, mas, exhaust, and flipchip here soon in the next month so at least i can give them a little taste of what an explorer really can do let alone if one really got serious about it like troll has become or like i plan on within the next year.

I get the same reaction.. when I call performance shops and explain what I have/want, I get chuckles or even flat out insults saying "you should consider another vehicle" most of the places wont refuse to do anything cos they want my money, but the stereotype is that suvs are slow worthless soccer mommy grocery getters with little to no capability beyond that.

I for one am little more than a commuter in mine and progbablly fit most of the stereotypes, I've been told so many times that an suv is hopeless in its speed capabilities that I had begun for a while to beleive it myself... but I'm going to ignore that.. an engines an engine, I dont care what its in, if there are mods for it, it can be powerful and the vehicle will perform.

IMO trolls truck is the exception, it shows you what you can do for about $30,000 and lots of time/contacts to custom fabricate things for you, and it proves that the speed does pauy off.. but not as much as say, that kind of money into a camaro or something. The average person doesn't have that kind of money to dump into a vehicle, and is not going to go that far on a daily driver anyway.

I beleive the vehicles should be A LOT faster stock.. the 5.0 stock is disappointing and sluggish, but with the avalibility of parts, its pretty hard to complain (although I've managed to do it anyway :p) I didn't think this way until I started talking to some guys with the 3800 chevy v6s and couldn't find ANYTHING.. no heads no maf, no nothing.. thanks to the mustang our trucks have a ton of mod parts and I think if you have the money to show em you can run with em.. then go for it.

that is one reason i am putting the parts in myself so i dont have to deal with alot of morons out there that stereotype everything that come their way. then after i get known on the local tracks for a little while and have had time to save nough money to complete my project i will go to those same shops i been avoiding and see if they really want to do business. i figure by then word of mouth will have gotten around the mustang and track going community in my area. i mean i wont be super fast or anything, with the setup i am getting here real soon i should be able to run low 13's and maaaaaaaybe high 12's if i am lucky. i will find out here soon. man i am going to have some real fun here soon. i almost wish i didnt have to go back to see the family for c-mas that way i could start on it earlier. durn already bought the plane ticket though. lol, imagine that,.....ditching the family to work on my car. they would never let me live that one down. lol. well i will keep you all posted as to what i am doing in this next month or so. take it easy.

you must get paid pretty well to do all this stuff, I mean given that they do make plenty of parts for our trucks, it practically goes without saying that it costs BIIIIIG bucks to do even tiny mods. I have $400 in "mods" in mine and only an air filter and a catback.. I looked into headers and stuff.. everytrihng cost too much and word on the forum it seems is that these parts make little to no difference.

however..

I want to hear how your work goes, and what products you choose anbd what numbers you get, if you could do a baseline dyno run before your mods (if you haven't already) to show where you're coming form..

Good luck with the truck man, take as may pics as possible ;) I do a lot more talking than I do working on my truck, so I think it'll be cool to see yet another speed demon molded out of an X

yeah i wish i had a really high paying job. actually i go places (in the military by the way) and stay in barracks so all my pay is goint towards car payment or savings. if thins would have went well i would have had over $11000 coming back to the states here soon, but as things turn out bush didnt sign the tax free bill yet so i am not going to get the back pay for that now it sounds like. so now i will only have $6000 right off of the bat when i get back to go completely into my explorer. man i have been researching for the past 8 months now and it seems to never end. i hear sooooooo many combo's to hitting higher horsepower that sometimes i feel i cannot stick to ne plan. but now that i have a little less money i will have to stick with s/c, no2(if i can afford it with everything else), cam, 3" exhaust, pro m 80 mm mas, baumann shift kit, and flipchip. soon after i will most likely add some 36 lb injectors. and see what else i will be able to afford from there.

hey thanks for the good words oh troll 1/8 times where a 10.90 pass if you convert them. so as is it would have gone a 10 on the last pass. some people just done listen and dont know what they are talking about i just try not to let them bother me. also i have flip chips and shift kits in stock if you want.

Thank you, thats why I hate ricers, yes some of them are quick, but the ones that I've seen at the track that are fast are completley gutted and not street legal with sometimes over 50,000 in mods and they still get their ***** seriously burned by Mustangs and other Cars that are still street legal. I have a friend whose dad has a street legal Mustang that runs 8's, I wanna see somebody do that to a Civic and still keep all the comforts and stock interior, maybe then I'll give them a little respect;)

only yours:p ;) :D

Blk Mk8 - no 02' Mounty yet, but our dealer got a V6 03' Mounty in Silver Frost and it's sweet in that color. It's getting way to hard to find a 02' Mounty in Mineral Grey with the 4.6 V8 and Lux Package, so now I'm looking for the same truck and 03's in that Silver Color. Maybe then I'll have the Mounty sooner so you guys can work your magic:D

no really.. even the 5.0 I tested wasn't fast enough.

a thing to think about with your 5.0. when you drive daily you probablly dont push it hard..say.. no more than 4k rpm per takeoff.. well, when you gun it.. it becomes more apparent.. what you're getting at 4k rpm is like 4/5 of what the truck is capable of, so when you demand more power, you dont get much more than a hard take-off's worth of accel, I've seen more than 1 person say soemthing about this so I know its not just me.

I agree TOTALLY saleen.. ricers.. gut EVERYTHING.. their cars are total hollow peices of junk by the time they are done.. sure it may help the times.. but.. as I say every time I get in an argument wiht a rice boy the nova at the local car show ran 9s.. and had stock seats door panels a full stock dash stock trunk and all the creature comforts.. along wiht a 4 or 5 point and a roll cage.. its not about how fast you can do it, its about how fast you can do it while looking good and being comfortable IMO

Heck yeah I am a full supporter of what Bill is doing with Troll. I suppose this type of mindset that alot of people have is kind of nice being that that type of soccermom mobile mindset is WHAT MAKES SLEEPERS so effective. Hey Dan most definately would i like to get that stuff from you, that way i know i am getting the best possible setup for my explorer from someone that actually understands their potential. just give me your contact info and i should be ordering the stuff within te next 3 weeks. right after the 1st of the year i want to start on it. well i got my list of stuff for my first phase of power up above there, is there anything else that you could reccommend to add in or would that combo right there do for now and hold its own well? the cam i will be getting and would really like to recieve either some pointers on how to install it myself or maybe see how much i can get it installed for, same with the shift kit. i want to do as much as possible but i am not confident enough to mess with those two yet. everything else should be no huge problem even though i have never done any of this before i am pretty mechanically inclined. got to start somewhere right? well thanks again.

blk_mk8. Hey i just took a look at your page again. I dont know what the situation with your stock for the 80 mm mas or dry NO2 kit is but i would like to get those through you too if possible. also if your shop could install the cam and shift kit i would not mind just coming down there and dropping it off and maybe taking a little leave from work and stay in a hotel or something till it was finished. plus i am dying to go for a ride in Troll too of course if Bill is not doing other things. i mean i have a slight idea of how fast it is but till i actually sit in it while going like that i wont really know. It is ummmmm for research purposes for my truck,........yeah ummmm. hehehe. thanks.

any thing i dont have i can get in less then a week most of the time. the nos kit about a day or so and the mass air a week. ya we can install a cam but they are a pain on the explorers. give me a call in the after noon about 5 or so because i cant be reached in the mornings and i dont write back to most of my email because there is too much and not enuf time for phone messages so just call late in the afternoons and you will get me ok.

i assume the number to call the shop is the one on your website entry page? i will be calling most likely within the week.

I'm no expert on this, but rocket I talked to some mustang guys the other day, and they said doing a cam swap without a new torque converter would slow the truck down.. I was told we have a 1200-ish stall converter? I really dont know much about this area, but I'm just repeating what an "Expert" said. He told me if I didn't want a new TC yet, I should go with rockers instead. well, I dont have the money for either heh, but its something I'd look into at least

um....... uh....... an expert told you that a better cam would slow the explorer down? WTF? i dont even know how to answer that one... expo5.0 has minor bolt ons and an e303 cam and is almost as fast as i was with a 75 shot of nitrous. i wouldnt really call that slower.

he said based on the cams specs and the fact that the ford computer is slow, along with the stock torque converter wiht an a/t the engine would surge trying to keep up with the E-303 cam and would require a chip to correct it, he also said tha tthe truck would lose any low end acceleration it has because the cam profile would change in such a way that the TC wouldn't know what to do..

I can give you the # if you want, I talked to this guy for probablly 30 minutes, he repeated these "Facts" over and over again, w/o any other mods (which is what I have) the cam in his opinion was a bad thing.

basically he said it was onna those all or none kinda things, if you're not willing to blow the bank and change out EVERYTHING you can't go with a mod like that.
