Bought a 2004 Ford Explorer Limited V8 a few weeks ago, there is a rattling noise at ~ 2400-2600 RPM. Almost sounds like a wire scraping as you pass through that range. Prior to a shift. Also occurs in the mid-3000 RPM range.

My understanding is on the V6's this is typical of timing chain 'slap' and on the V8's this is typical of a torque convertor.

To try and diagnose I had my wife rev up the car in the driveway in neutral and park, both situations absolutely no noise. I then drove the car and with the transmission engaged the noise was back.

Is it safe to presume then that the noise is coming from the torque converter?
