rattling sound on gear

hi everyone,

my 96 eddie bauer has a rattling sound whenever it's on neutral or drive and i have the brake on. as soon as i accelerate a bit it disappears. i have no problems while driving it.

mechanic says the sound is coming from the transmission, and i've read other posts suggesting this might be a torque converter. how can i be sure? i don't want to pay 2-3k to find out it's not the issue.

Are you sure its coming from the trans? Could be the heat shield over the exhaust, it will rattle when your in gear and stopped, then usually go away when you accelerate.

that's what the mechanic says. i also told him to check the heat shields but he claims it's not that. any other possibilities? and if it is the torque converter, do you have to rebuild the transmission?
