I have a 94 explorer with a 4.0L and auto trans. My problems
began with the first engine and trans. It began with the engine
unable to keep running. It would run very rough then after a
while it would not start. Then the trans would not shift from
low gear until it almost hit 6,000 rpm, then shift with a jolt.

Well both the engine and trans were replaced. Now the same
problems are happening again. Two engines and trans with
the same problem?

Could it be the computer? Where is the computer located?

I'm about ready to throw a flare in it. PLEASE help.

Bill

Hey Bill,

pull the codes from the computer and see where that leads. It could very well have been the ECM (behind the passenger side kick panel)

What if anything was removed from the old engine and re-used? Coil, sensors, plugs/wires etc...

I don't believe anything was used from the old engine
and trans. Right now it is sitting in front of the garage.
Pull the codes????? I don't understand.

More often than not, if your computer controlled vehicle is not working properly the computer will store trouble codes. These codes can be read (pulled) and will point to where your problem may be.

How do I "pull the codes".
I don't have a machine.
Can the computer be taken
out and and read when hooked
up to a machine?
Bill

Bill, you need to get a code reader. Can pick one up at Wal-Mart, Harbor Freight. Anywhere from $40 on up

Codes could be pending in the system so you'll want to have that handy for any troubleshooting.

Will that work? It states 1996 and up.
Does the engine have to be running?
Or can it be done with just the key
in the on position. Hate to be a pain
in the a**. But this thing is driving
me nuts.

my tranny did the same thing, is it a new tranny or just rebuilt? Mine had to be replaced and rebuilt before it worked. It would drive and not shift outta first, then when I stopped rpms red lined and it slammed into second, spit out fluid everywhere and then wouldn't shift outta 1st all the way to work (love going 20 down the highway for 20 miles :p) is the check engine light on? Or anything on the dash? To pull the codes go to your mechanic he'll know what to do, or go to the shop that replaced them and tell them of doesn't work still!

I went to my local advance parts store.

They had a ACTRON code scanner. I was
told this is for pre-1995 and will find and
clear the codes. The manual gives the code
numbers and what they are for, but the
scanner does not give a readout. Only
Audio switch (on/off), a test/hold switch
and a STO (self test output light)

Take it back to AZ and ask them how to use it. You need to hook it to the OBDI/EECIV connector under the hood. There are two connectors (1 trapezoid shaped, and one small rectangular shaped) that you hook it to. Also, most AZs will pull the codes for free.

Figured out the scanner. It works on a series
of beeps. For example 2 beeps, then pause,
3 beeps, pause, 4 beeps would be the code of
234. But alas, the truck still not start. Going to
have another go at it tomorrow.
