Rear axial c clip removal

2001 Explorer Sport 4.0 2 Door

What tool is needed to remove the c clip. I need to pull the axial to replace the seal.

Just to slam it with a 3lb hammer @ the open end of the clip with a 1" wide screwdriver?

All serious suggestions will be appreciated.

you have to take the rear diff apart a bit to do the c clip,,
take the cover off take out the spiders or l/s clutch pack, than push in the axle, take out the clip, than pull the axle out,

yup, once you take the gears out, push the axle in and it will give you the room to simply pull the c clips out.

You don't need to take the spider gears out. If it's a conventional diff you remove the bolt that holds in the retention pin and pull the pin out. Then push in on the axle, remove the c-clip with a pair of needle nose pliers. Just don't spin either axle with the other one out and the gears won't fall out. On a limited slip you have to remove the s-retainer clip, push in on the axles and remove the c-clip. There are a bunch of threads on this. Search axle shaft removal.
