8.8 locker choices are readily available

more expensive version is the ARB that is selectable

Limited slip units that replace the carrier

For what you do (50 street, 50 rocks) I would say go with an ARB. If you were 50 street, 50 off road, slippery hills, small rocks, etc, then the limited slip will probably work well also.

I do not drive my truck every day on the road, but I have a Detroit. Traction is always there, driven correctly the tires do not chirp too bad.

driven correctly = turn then gas? LOL

weld it!:p:

Ford 8.8" Auburn ECTED is an excellent choice, similar to the ARB, but considerably cheaper and simpler since everything is contained within the locker itself (ie: no air compressor, air hoses). The ARB is still a reputable and strong unit, but there are a few more "parts" where it can go wrong (mostly air leaks) out on the trail.

Honestly if budget is a factor, I'd highly recommend an Aussie. They do chirp and feel funny accelerating around turns but it's easy to get used to, and fun to be locked all the time.

x2 on the Aussie -- for ~$250 USD, its difficult to beat.

If you don't mind "chirps" and want to "be locked all the time", then for the tightest of tight budgets you can't beat a mini spool. The money you save will be spent on tires. HAAA! :D

How difficult is it to put in a locker? I meen is it something you can do at home in the garauge or do you have to have special tools for it?

x3 on the aussie its cheap price wise, durable, locks well, easy to instal and has a warranty. I have one being shipped right now for my explorer which is a '98 8.8 31spline with 4.10's and an open rear diff.

I had some questions about a locker:

-What axles does my 2000 Explorer 5.0 have, or how can I check?
-Does AWD or Air Ride suspension limited me to anything?
-I mostly just do light mudding and some sandy hill climbing, will these make a big difference?

In order...

Front: Dana 35 (most likely) ; Rear: Ford 8.8"
No.
Yes, oh yes, though I'd start out by only installing one in the rear.

If you've never worked on an axle, then budget about 3 hrs time, but it shouldn't take that long. Just general shop/garage hand tools to install. Nothing special.

Just remember that if you're like me and thought it was sweet that you had a limited slip from the factory, when you get to the point that you need/want a locker, its not so sweet anymore. As far as I know the only option is a Powertrax "lunchbox" type. And its about $500.

There's tons more options than a powertrax and those guys in that link above had powertrax going for $300.

The LS carrier and the open carrier are different. If you have an open carrier then anything for a 31 spline 8.8 will work. If you have a LS carrier then most lockers won't fit in it. At least thats how I understand it.

What do you mean by a little "chirp"?

You mean my AWD will finally make the wheels slip a little bitt?
