1996 Explorer Sport 4.0 4wheel disc brakes.

I started noticing a loud clanking noise coming from the rear of the truck when I would get close to the center median or on a bridge.

I pulled off rear driver wheel to see that my Caliper is very loose and the whole thing along with the rotor can be moved back and forth very easily. The metal clips where the caliper usually rests were gone and the metal on metal began to wear a small groove. However the caliper still seems to rest there just fine.

I went to tighten bolts and they were all the way tight. I removed and retightened and still alot of play.

I checked passenger side and everything was normal and tight. The only thing I can see is that pins or rubber boot or whatever you call it that the bolts go through to hold the caliper on were very loose and didnt seem to fit in their very tight.

I am looking for recommendations on what I should do. Can I order a new pin/boot kit and if so how would I install it? or should I get a whole new caliper?

Thanks

I know they are available at the local parts stores for my '02. Sorry, I can't vouch for the 1st Gen's.

Consider this a free bump. :D

there should be a pin with a rubber boot that pushes into the caliper. the bolt screws through the caliper mounting bracket and into the pin. you should be able to buy all the individual pieces at the auto parts store. you might be safer to just replace the caliper. it should come with new pins, boots and shims and maybe even the bolts. a reman caliper from Autozone, or Advance is pretty inexpensive. when you have your old one off also inspect the mounting bracket for tightness, wear or cracks and replace it if suspect.

I think it may be the shims in between the caliper and the bracket... they are missing and a groove has wore....thinking i might need a new or used bracket

When I was looking for pins on my second gen with 4 wheel disc brakes. I could not find any, but the new calipers came with them, luckily I just put a lot of grease into mine and it was fine.

i'm not aware of anything (like shims) between the caliper and bracket. there are usually shims on the backs of the pads to help eleminate squeal, and there are anti rattle clips between the pads and the caliper mounting bracket.
