If you give can send me a pdf of parts exploded or a description of where these shims are located (bear in mind i have not had a diff appart and don't know the correct name for the parts) then i'll pop in to my local dealer on fri and see if he can help. He tries to help me when i go in there.

Thanks Jan

problem is the explorer didn't have shims (I think) so they are not on the diagrams.

The basically fit between the C washer and the Pinion gear of the Diff on each end of the drive shaft. Stops side to side play...

So i'm assuming it will need to be an old rwd transit
Like i said those parts descriptions mean nothing to me.... off to do some reading on the diff

Ok so would it fit between parts 11 and 12 on this diagram

Diff exploded

Also do you know the thickness you are looking for and the diameter of the shaft and max outer diameter

Just to add i'm eager to assist on this as i have a little (read lot) of play on my axles. Just lateral mind, last time i checked.
I'm planning on opening up the diff to change the fluid and seal it up as i've had a slight leak and the case needs prettifying. Is it easy enough to pull the axles from the diff without messing with the tricky stuff?

dif end play

hi jim /jan
there will always be some play as the shafts have to be pushed in to fit/remove the c clip then has to go back into the pinion gear release to hold it in if its shimmed to far forward the clip may not seat properly. also how has this play got worse than when new ? the shaft pinion gear and c clip all rotate together. has the play got worse because the pinion gear thrust has worn. things to get you thinking  . cheers chris

hi kevin
the caliper and pads are mounted on slide bolts and should go in and out with the disc.cheers chris

hi all
the caliper is mounted to the axle case on two slide bolts that let the caliper move in and out.
i have looked at the article for the transit axle mod and it seems that a dish/case clamps to the pinion shaft and can be loaded with shims if needed . the transit doesn't have a lsd i wonder if the mod dish can be fitted with the lsd z spring . cheers chris

Hi Chris

you could be right, play when I did the bearings was about 4mm, gut feel is that is may be worse now (I've not checked yet) but I know that the outside brake pad on the rear is wearing more than the inners (anybody else see this?)

Maybe I will take another Diff from you and to a refurb and swap over. - do you have a good one in stock? (BTW the one I had off you in 18 months ago has done another 58k miles so can't complain :D)

cheers

Jim

hi Jim
i think uneven pad wear could be down to sticky slide pins or the fact that modern calipers have piston/s on just one side. as for the end float if you put shims between the c clip and pinion gear that moves the c clip forward out of its retaining releases.the shaft is stopped from moving in by the pinion shaft as you cant use a bigger shaft because it wont go through the carrier fords solution on the transit is to fit a collar with shims to the pin some how( Ive not seen one )this stops the shaft from moving in as much. this may not be possible on the explorer axle as it has the LSD z spring . just a thought if you could extend the end of the shaft poss by welding and then filling off the excess this would take up the play.cheers chris

Hi Jim. When I checked my driveshafts earlier in the year, I was rather alarmed by the level of lateral float - about 0.5 to 1mm. However, Chris pacified me by saying this is not a lot at all. At the time, I looked through various threads on this matter - mostly in the US - and some were talking of 5mm!! Now that would worry me.

mine at 4mm still drives ok,

maybe a couple of blobs of weld on the C washers will do the job.

Anybody got a couple of spare ones :p:

hi jim
i think weld on the c clips would stop them siting in the grove .i was thinking on the inner end of the shafts.cheers chris

yes I can see that now, I've been reviewing a sticky post on rear bearings that shows the C clip and it would need a weld on the end of the shaft.

My other throught is (looking at the Picture) are the 'cogs' worn on the outside.

I guess they run against the diff cage so maybe the shim is required between the gears and the cage?

Anyone got an exploded parts diagram for the diff (1997 era)?
