My car works great in that all 4 doors automatically lock when I put the car in drive and start to head down the road. The problem comes when I am done driving and I put the car in park.

I am able to open my driver side door from the inside. The passenger is also able to open their passenger side door from the inside with no problems.
However, the people in the back seat cannot exit the car. And, the Child Security Locks are NOT in the "on" position. They are unlocked.

For example, if you were in the back seat you can't pull the door handle and open the door to get out. The driver or passenger has to hit Unlock to let them out or they have the toggle the door lock themselves before they can pull the door handle and exit the car.

Is this right? I find it annoying, and I wasn't sure if there was a setting. I read through the manual but didn't find anything. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yep, that is normal, My 2002 F-350, and 2005 Escape and 1991 Explorer all are the same way, I think it is some kind of safety thing???

same on my 04 explorer

I hit the unlock button as I get out which allows the rear passengers to get out.

Chrysler's are the same way, very annoying. Only redeaming GM quality is that when you put the vehicle in park all the doors unlock.

I'll also jump on to say it's ANNOYING too... Everytime we have rear passengers, we have to do the same - hit the unlock button from the front doors to let the rear passengers out. It's something that has been incorporated after the 2002's or 03's, because my Father's 2003 V8 does not do this...

I thought maybe it has something to do w/ the child lock lever on the rear doors - but it does not seem to make a difference if the child lock is "on" or "off", the rear passengers are still locked in until we let them out... LOL.

If anyone knows a bypass to this, please post it up.

Its all about safety
statistically, kids sit in the back seats... and if you park on a busy street you don't want your kid getting out before you get to them.

But I wish it was switchable!
My in laws stayed with us for a few months last year, they got used to unlocking by hand before I could unlock with the switch.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I figured that I was just going crazy, doing something wrong, or my car was malfunctioning.

It looks like everything is OK then.

Thanks!

Deactivating/activating autolock

Your vehicle comes with the autolock feature activated. There are four
methods to enable/disable this feature: One is through your dealer, the
second with a power door unlock/lock sequence, the third with the
keypad, and the fourth by using the message center (if equipped).
Before following the activation or deactivation procedures, make sure
that the anti-theft system is not armed, ignition is off, and all vehicle
doors, liftgate and liftgate window are closed.
Power door unlock/lock procedure
You must complete steps 1-5 within
30 seconds or the procedure will
have to be repeated. If the
procedure needs to be repeated,
you must wait 30 seconds.

1. Turn the ignition to the 3 (ON)
position.
2. Press the power door unlock
control three times.
3. Turn the ignition from the 3 (ON) to the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position.
4. Press the power door unlock control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to the 3 (ON) position. The horn will chirp.
6. Press the unlock control, then press the lock control. The horn will
chirp once if autolock was deactivated or twice (one short and one long
chirp) if autolock was activated.
7. Turn the ignition to the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position. The horn will chirp
once to confirm the procedure is complete.

Keyless entry key pad procedure

1. Turn the ignition to the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position.
2. Close all the doors, the liftgate and liftgate window.
3. Enter 5–digit entry code
4. Press and hold the 7 • 8. While holding the 7 • 8 press the 3 • 4.
5. Release the 3 • 4.
6. Release the 7 • 8.
The user should receive a horn chirp to indicate the system has been
disabled or a chirp followed by a honk to indicate the system has been
enabled.
Message center procedure
For information on activating/deactivating the autolock feature using the
vehicle’s message center (if equipped), refer to Message center
information in the Driver Controls chapter.

there is also the finger method, there is a lock lever next to door handle on all four doors . . not the same as 4dr auto which would be nice.

Thank you very much for the info. I did see that in my manual. However, I enjoy that the doors automatically lock when you put it in drive and start to drive down the road. I just wasn't sure why the doors wouldn't automatically unlock or let you out of the car when you were in Park and done driving.

By disabling the autolock feature then the doors will never lock when you put the car in drive either. I guess I am greedy and I wanted it done both ways.

My mom has a Chevy Trailblazer and they autolock when you drive away, and they unlock when you put the car in Park. I think that is why I may have been confused during my initial post.

Thanks.

Not to be a pain but I hate that autolocking feature and I don't know why anyone would want it. I guess I don't like being told what to do :) How come you like it?

My aunt was "almost" carjacked.... if it wasnt for her auto-locking doors, and the perp not being able to get in her car, who knows what would have happened.
So I like it especially when my wife takes our baby out by herself.
