I have a 2007 Explorer and my trusty, honest mechanic told me a while back my rear pinion seal was leaking. I had been seeing something in the driveway near the rear of the car and apparently that's what it was. Sadly, my mechanic passed away recently so I can't ask him more about the seal. Basically, it's a very slow leak but it's been going on for a while so whatever is leaking out of that seal needs to be topped off until I can afford to replace the seal, along with a million other mostly minor things. So my question (finally, right? lol) is what is the fluid that is leaking out called? I need to know so what to ask for when I go to have more added. I know it's probably a very elementary question but I don't know that much about cars so bear with me. Thanks in advance :)

Gear oil. Top off with synthetic 75W-140, available from dealer, Autozone, Advance Auto, Walmart etc.
