Kennesaw mountan accessories. THink they are at www.KMA.com They sell a rear tire carrier. I keep mine in the back cargo area in the winter (so I can fit my x in the garage) and put it on my roof rack in the summer time.

Cory over at CRLCustoms.com makes some really nice ones. He's sold several of them to members on the boards, including me.

??

How do you open the tailgate with that thing on there? I am wondering because my spare tire holder need some work...the cable that holds the whatchamajigger is rusting and frayed. I thought about mounting on the back, but since I take my dog everywhere, I would need easy access to open/close the tailgate as well as keeping the back window open for him.

Any ideas or comments on how much of a pain it is to replace that cable. If its not a pain, how to do it?

Thanks!!

You can find a whole new spare tire winch at a junkyard, or Morrisey0 (Robb) has one for sale I believe.

The carrier is really easy to open. It takes about 5-10 more seconds to open and close the hatch:

what I don't like about them is the actual bumper. I would much prefer something more sqare and solid that was flush with the splash guards on the side. I've been searching through here and sounds like going with KM is like gambling.

I'm trying to get someone local to do something.

Cool...I'll search the for sale and see if there's a listing for one. I thought about the junkyards, too...

So for the one you show Alec, do you have to have the custom bumper...or is that part of the "package" when you get it? I really like the look of it. I also thought about putting it (spare) on the roof, in one of those safari roof basket-thingys (my very technical girl description) similar to yours, but seeing as I am only 5'2" I may not be able to get it down if I need it!! LOL

CoryL makes each bumper to order. He took his original design and modified it a bit to provide me what I wanted. I like the bumper very much and I feel much better having a full-sized spare that I can get to easily.

As for having the spare on the roof, you would most likely need help to get it up and down, I've only seen one person put a 33 or 35 up on their roof alone.

I can put my 33"er up on the roof. It isn't real easy, but can be done. Getting it down is easier. (I just drop and bounce it). I am 6', so I have a good reach. I have to stand on my bumper though. I will be getting a rear tire/bumper mount in a few months. I am gonna call around to a lot of the J@@P places to see if they will modify a J@@P Cherokee bumper to fit my Explorer. They are about the same size.

Yeah, thats the one!!!!

My bad yo!!

Explorer Express used to sell one . I had it years ago. I liked it very much. I sold it because my wife was giving me grief about it. At the time we only one vehicle my X and she would use it to go food shopping. She said it was too hard to operate, "Women" ??? As a matter of fact I sold it to someone on this site, I think his name was top agent or something like that?:exp:

Check out BulletProof Mfg - BulletProof Bumpers: http://www.bulletproofmfg.com/ and look for the Swing Out Carrier for XJs:

THAT is one sweet, kickazz bumper / carrier. I called today and talked to Loren, a very helpul sales rep, who also happens to have a 94 Explorer. Loren told me that right now they are not working on anything for the Ford Explorer, but he said something might be available in a year or so. He also said the more demand for it they get, the faster they will focus on it. So drop them a phone call, or better yet, send em an email, that's what the owner reads.

Of course I referred him to our site as well to help him with his '94 and hopefully to keep us updated about any new products.

I do like that, but would like the tire off-center so you can see out the back. Never had anything blocking my view, but think it might get annoying to have something always there.

This is my CRLcustoms bumper (in very unfinished, rusted form):

IMO, I prefer the tube bumpers over the bulky solid ones. They are just as strong and LIGHTER. Our Xs weigh enough as they are, they don't need a heavy bumper on top of their stock weight. Most of the solid bumpers I have seen also look a bit too "square" to me.

i wish i could remember where i saw it, but there's one out there that fits into a hitch receiver, with a lock.

i want to say it was made by draw-tite or something.
