one of my friends gave me a posi unit out of a 8.8 mustang rear, I was wondering if I would be able to use this in my 94 sport, don't want to go out and get the rebuild for it then find out I can't use it
I am not very familure of the 8.8 they used in Mustangs. I do know the Explorer came with 31 spline axles, if the mustang has the same splines then it will work. Just have to switch you gears if they are not the same.
The Mustang carrier is for a 28 splined axle, so it will not work in your rearend.
Switching gears will not solve the problem as they have nothing to do with the spline count on the axles or carrier.
The only way to get it to work wouldn't benefit you as you would have to get custom 28 spline axles made and that is stepping down in strength.
I'm not sure if you could swap out the spider gears in the carrier itself. That would really be the only way to retain the 31 spline axleshafts and use teh Mustang limited slip.
You'd be better off selling it on Ebay and finding one for a 31 spline 8.8".
