I am hoping some one can help me out. I have a 94 explorer with tranny problems. A couple of days after Christmas I lost 2nd gear, 220k on tranny so i figured it was time for a rebuild. No time to do this myself ( or experience) so took it to a local tranny shop.
Parts replaced:
Trans overhaul kit
exchange torque converter
hot flush trans cooler
shell
planet o/d
pump seal bushing
servo
boost valve
electrical
total cost $2180
so 3 day car rental later I get the truck back drive it around everything seams fine. go to back up in the morning won't go into reverse sit there for about 25 seconds then bang into gear, back out of driveway and drive to work, won't shift to overdrive, finally after tranny is warm it shifts to o/d.

Take it back the the shop they end up replacing the center support hub, said it was cracked.Another $160 for parts.

Well it has been in and out of the shop now 4 times all with the same problem.
Delayed reverse when cold
delayed shift from d to o/d when cold
and as of the last time it was in I now have a new problem
periodic fast shift from 2nd to 3rd
occosionally skips drive completely and goes straight to overdrive bogging engine and setting of warn engine light.

Shop has also drilled holes to increase oil pressure for delayed reverse. they are now saying it could be a cracked case.

I have had no problems with this tranny (have had this truck for 10yrs) even when I lost second gear all other gears where fine.

any help would be appreciated.Should have come here before I brought it into the shop woulda been fixed right the first time.

Welcome to this forum! The shop should use an air pressure test plate, code scanner, and a 0-300 PSI gauge on the transmission. I'm suspicious when you said that they charged an additional $160 for the center support. They would have had to tear it apart to get to that part. Another thing which concerns me is that they replaced the bell housing bushing without having a special machine shop cut it with a lathe. An average transmission shop is not equipped to do this unless they gave it out. They could not get it back in 3 days if they did. There are only 2 places in the US which do this type of service that I'm currently aware of. I don't know of any in Canada.

I'm curious, does this shop not offer any warranty on their work? Why are you still paying?
My tranny was rebuilt at the dealership 20K before I bought the truck, the invoice says in cost $2000. Over a year and one flush since, runs fine

thanks for the replies
This shop was not my first choice to bring it but it was the only one open on Saturday. They do offer a 3yr 60,000km warranty.
My concern now is that they will want to replace the case which i was quoted $300 - 500. I can't see it being this problem.
I have absolutely no confidence that this shop will be able to rectify my problem but I am at a loss as what to do next. I really don't want to sink any more money into this.
I decided to check engine codes as the 3/4 shift could be electrical related.

114 iat sensor out of range
116 engine coolant(ect) sensor out of range
124 tp voltage was higher than expected

not sure but I beleive these codes could be related to when the engine bogged down from missed shift.
I guess I will have to bring it back to the shop AGAIN.
wish me luck I will keep you posted.

codes were read with engine cold koeo. I will take the truck for a drive today and check all codes when I get back.
If this were a tps problem would it not show up in the code reader.

This is why I suspected the tps. won't shift to o/d until tranny has warmed up.
also after the they rebuilt the tranny I drove it for a day and the fluid smelt burnt, this is when they replaced the center support hub. does not smell burnt now but i'm wondering?????
do you think this could be a cracked case that is causing all my problems.I'm almost tempted to rip this thing out myself but its under warranty and you would think a transmission shop would KNOW what is going on with it.

Depends on the shop...You are doing the right thing by doing some research on your own though. So many people are so overwhelmed by an automatic tranny that the shops can rape them for all it's worth. Make sure you check everything out as best you can BEFORE you shell out any more money

so, here is what i have found out so far.
took the truck for a drive and pulled the codes.
koeo
code 124- tp voltage was higher than expected
koer
no codes
checked the voltage at TPS with key on
4.1 volts should be 5.0
key on throttle wide open reads 4.9 volts, should be around 5.0. sounds ok to me
while driving around 100km/hr depressed brake while maintaing speed and rpm increased meaning tcc unlocked? solenoid issue?
I can usually figure things out but tranny's have me baffled.
This site is great.
