I just want to be clear, that if you regear the rear do you have to regear the front as well and use the same gear ratio? I'm just a little stumped on this.

Absolutely. If you don't re-gear both to the same ratio, the driveshafts will try to turn at different rates and destroy your drivetrain.

i think you can have it off by .03 if you absoluly have to, but I'd recommend against it personally. If money is tight you can re-gear the back and use it as 2WD until you get the front, but you better disconnect that switch or something.

Sometimes it is not possible to run the exact same ratio in both axles. My d44 and 9" have different ratios, the d44 a 5.13 but the 9" a 5.14. There is no problem doing this since it's close enough. According to the link below less than 2% on road, 3% off.

I got one more question. I'm putting 33's on my truck, it has 3.73's LS and I know I need to regear it to a 4.56. But the question is, when should I regear it, asap or when I need essentially need it?

Should I worry about my transmission(auto) with those gears? I do have a bigger than factory oil cooler, but you never know.

it wouldent hurt to do it right away... ive got 2-8x10 inch coolers and 32s on 3.27s it gets hot pretty fast around town.

i had 3.55 and 33s and never regeared mine was fine...

thats good to know, I just don't want to pay for another transmission, one's enough. Since I'm easy on my truck, I feel better knowing it will be good to go.

I think i ran mine for six or eight months before i went to a solid axle setup.

I have the same setup. 33x12.50 3:73 LS and have no complaints.

Whats it like on the trail and in mud? Can you still spin the tires if your in the mud?

But I think with the posts in this thread, I think I'll be happy with the setup I got now.

you will be happy but lower is better...i love my 488s with my 36s...

yll be able to spin them in the mud...

I am not quite sure I understand your question about spinning the tires in mud. But yeah they will spin.
I have no noticeable power loss putting on 33's with my 3:73 setup. Although I do have the 302 which I am sure does not hurt. I do not know what you have.
I would say put the 33's on and if your not happy then regear.
Just my 2 cents

Yeah, those are the words I'm looking for. Any power loss? But I get an idea on how it will perform. Thanks for the help

How much should one expect to pay to have both axles re-geared? Just want to make sure i'm not getting ripped off

lost it all depends on who is gonna do the swap and what gears you are gonna go with...
