Removing or Trimming Front Air Deflector / Dam

Note that the winter blends of gasoline can have a slight impact on fuel economy. Air density will also increase with colder weather, which requires your engine work harder due to increased drag.

Hey everyone,

I joined the explorer group getting a 2016 Ford Explorer Limited recently. I been lurking here for awhile reading up on some aftermarket changes. I had a couple questions for everyone after searching and reading some of the threads

Has anyone completely removed the front valance that hangs down with pictures? I've seen the trimmed pictures which don't look to bad, but I been trying to find the police explorer valance?

I do a lot of hiking, camping, offroading (I don't offroad to much anymore-too many people sitting on trails) and it was a little embarrassing scraping on a curb which I've never had with any of my lifted vehicle obviously.

Thank you all for your replies!

hi all, I’m new here but I’ve had a few Exploders over the course of my life- I try to like them and to buy American, etc., but it’s always something! Right now the front lower bumper assembly constantly comes part way off and hangs off the side like some kind of moving junk pile.

Can anyone tell me if I’m missing a clip or something? It’s got a couple tabs which I can put back in, but I must be catching it on the curb as I back out while turning into the street. Can I just take this off?

Thanks!

Jesse

Welcome to the Forum Jesse.
Are you referring to the lower valance? The valance is part of the aerodynamics and also has a cutout on the passenger side that is used to cool the turbo by way of an air duct. If we are talking about the same item then there are a couple members who have either removed it and/or trimmed it. I have merged your thread with this one. You may want to check out the links in post #90
If you're thinking about trimming it check this out; Directions& photos to trim lower fasica & prevent scraping

New owner of a 2016 Sport. Was inspecting this ultra low valance, and while I have read(and seen in photos) that the cut out feeds air into another duct for supposed cooling of engine parts. I do not see such a thing on my vehicle. Perhaps mine 'fell off' at the dealership after an oil change as I've read can happen...

EDIT: Found this thread which confirms the duct is equipped for vehicles w/ the tow package. The air diversion provides cooling to the back end of engine where it meets the transmission.
Since its only provided in Tow equipped vehicles, I suppose it's not necessary if not towing.

EDIT Again: More reading has brought up that it may help in providing cooler air to the exterior of one of turbos. Not sure how much is helps, or is needed, as they turbos have intercoolers. It seems like many people are losing these in the shop, or immediately after oil changes while on the road as the techs rarely replace all the screws correctly.

Welcome to the Forum TS-ENGR.
I believe it is to help cool the area of the PTU & transmission since not all Explorers with the tow package have turbos.
