removing starter

Any tips on how to remove upper bolt (I believe it is 13mm) on starter. I have used every socket (incl. deep), socket wrench, cheater pipe, & extension in my tool box, and can not get enough play from underneath vehicle to apply the leverage required to loosen. The frame is in the way, and the bolt head is right up against the solenoid. Is there a tool a shop uses to get at it from top? Bolt head is starting to round off, and knuckles are split. Help please. (It is 94 Explorer Ltd.)

A U-joint between the socket and extension should reach it.

You could also remove the solinoid first and that might allow you to access the bolt?
