repainting 3rd gen xlt trim?

I own a 03 xlt with a tanish trim. I would like to possibly paint it black. There are several threads about using the krylon fusion paint. I've looked at these and it seems their trim is the rough plastic stuff. Mine is smooth and shiny. does anyone have experience with painting their xlt trim? How would I go about doing this? Do I need to sand/prep?

No, not so much. The actual trim around the car is what I'm talking about. Above the wheel wells and on the bottom of the doors. Its not the cheap plastic stuff. Its actual painted trim. Nicer stuff for the xlt model I believe.
