Yesterday the passenger side steering rack boot split in my 4wd 1995 EB Explorer and leaked power steering fluid everywhere on the street. I was at home and have not driven it.

I think I could replace this by removing the tie-rod.
Is this true, or do I have to remove the whole power steering rack?
Is there anything else special required?

Thanks!

You can replace the boot, but that won't solve your problem. The boots don't retain power steering fluid, the seals on the rack do. Unfortunately, the rack needs to be replaced. :( It's no small task to replace either, but it can be done.

So it definitely is power steering fluid comming out of the boot?

I'll see how much the rack is. I think $200 - $300 for the part.

Thanks.

Well, I can't say for certain that it is PS fluid, I haven't actually seen your truck, so please investigate further and make sure your rack is leaking.

Please do yourself a favor and buy a quality rack, be wary of the cheaper rebuilt racks, the quality of the boots and other things can vary greatly.
