97 Explorer XLT 4wd 6cyl 4l SOHC Control Trac.133960 miles. When I bought this vehicle last July I cleaned out the mass air flow sensor, IAC, a general tune up, replaced filters and belt. It didn't want to stay running, acted like it was out of gas. The idle would fluctuate, leveled out with load engaged. Replaced fuel filter changed all the fluids again. After that, it improved significantly.A month ago it started started idle fluctuation again, I replaced the IAC. N97 explorer XLT ow it's idling around 3K. I don't have any vacuum leaks or otherwise.. Do I just need to do an idle relearn? If so, what is the procedure for a 97 Explorer XLT? I've done idle relearn before but on Chevy's .Thank you in advance for your help.

It's possible to install an iac backwards. When this happens you get high idle.Try flipping it just for nothing other than to give it a try.

The internal spring should hold the valve closed. While it's off check that it is, and the spring isn't broken.

Should not need a relearn for a new iac valve.

A lot of sub par inexpensive overseas products have out-of-box failures as well. Also, did you do any other task at same time of replacing IAC?

I had a high idle problem develop suddenly a few yrs ago on my '98 SOHC and a new IAC solved the problem without conducting any relearning procedure. Per recommendations on this site, I went with Hitachi's #ABV0052 who was original supplier to Ford. Unfortunately, I discovered shortly thereafter that they are no longer available. Marketed under Ford Motorcraft pt #97JF-9F715-BA, that number shows they are discontinued as well. That leaves aftermarket or used as your options.
