Curious if anyone has experience to share with the quality / fit of replacement fuel tanks (1997 Mountaineer). The Google tells me they range in price from $150 to $350 with a couple of different manufacturers. I would hazard a guess that there is actually only 1 or 2 sets of tooling making these things and the get marketed under multiple brands.

While I have the tank down, I am planning to replace the evap lines - it looks like they are carbon steel and very rusty on my Mountaineer. Any pro tips as far as getting that job done?

Thank you! Andrew

Be careful with the fuel lines! I believe its just one long return. Get the specialty tool for disconnecting the fuel pump connections.

Lots of PB blaster helps.

This thread members just talking all about the fuel tank dropping, lots of good pictures and advice starting around page 29.

I purchased my tank from rockauto. The fit was spot on.
Problems I had where the following:
1. Fuel Filler connections (2). Yours are uses hose clamps.
2. Two fuel pump retaining bolts, where rusted.
3. 1/2" Vapor line rusted out.( replaced with stainless steel line).
You should replace yours with copper nickel.
While the tank is down, replace brake line in frame rail.
4. Fuel tank strap rusted out in place.
5. The fuel lines are stainless steel.
Note there is a rubber pad glue too the top of the fuel tank. You can use armor flex.( Homedepot).
A.) Some people had problems releasing the supply and return lines on the tank.
B.) Eb4x ( this forum)talk about replacement fuel pump.
