Replacing a u joint

Hope someone can help me. My son and his mechanic friend are going to replace the lower ball joints and u joint on my 1994 explorer. I found a schematic for the lower ball joints for him but have yet to find anything about the u joint and what additional tools he will need to do this. I need to have this work done and it beats paying $700 to have the work done to pass inspection. Also I had new front and back brakes installed last January what could have caused all 4 to go bad in a years time???
