Been lurking here for a couple weeks trying to figure out whats wrong with my wife's 99 Explorer. Its 4.0L SOHC with the 5 speed. I believe that would be the 5R55E. (VIN Code E)
I have read through the valve body rebuild diary and the stairway to diary. No luck finding the symptoms that match exactly. When she puts it in reverse gear, we give it a little gas and starts to move, but then a little more gas, and it feels like it slips out. But then it sometimes catches and jerks rear-ward, then slips again. This is much more pronounced when its warmed up. Rarely happens cold. She also once reported it did the same thing at speed on the highway. Only happened 1 or 2 times though. No 2-3 slip as others have reported here.
We have had the trannny oil and filter changed. No help. Aamco said we should replace the whole transmission... at $2500. I don't think so.
From this, would having a mechanic pull the VB and have them look for broken brackets or solenoids or worn seals.. possibly fix the problem? Or are there other seals near these bands I keep reading about but don't understand fully? (Thats what the Aamco guy said).
Any help or ideas appreciated!
