Hey all

2009 Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin 4.6L. Driving home yesterday with cruise control on, truck started to sputter and slow so I took it out of cruise and pulled off the road as the truck died.

I checked oil level etc and restarted, it idled roughly for a minute or so and died. I tried again to restart and it was a struggle, once it did run it idled really rough for 10-20 seconds and died again.

I am going to replace the fuel filter as it needs it, its over due, any chance this could be the issue or has anyone else got information that can help me as they have experienced the same issues? Any help would be appreciated :)

Just replaced the fuel filter. Truck still wont start. I will have to investigate other ways to check the truck

Any chance the fuel pump died? Do you have a code reader available? Good luck.

No code reader availabe at this time. I had a brain fart doing the filter. I should have left the feed side line off and put the key to the on position to see if it was pumping...

Am I correct in assuming if I put the key into my STA, and turn it to the 2nd position (On) just before turning it all the way to crank the motor that the fuel pump should be turning on?

I just got a EB 2002 4.6L that i just replaced the front timing chains and now its making a tapping sound but drives fine what is going on please help

if you don't hear the fuel pump whine briefly when you turn the key to on, you may have a bad fuel pump driver module (FPDM). its on the frame crossrail just above the spare tire. the module is aluminum on the bottom and bolted to the steel frame, and the dissimilar metals cause the module to corrode fast. I unbolted mine and placed a piece of plastic between them, and have not had a problem since new.

Its a 02 built in 2001 i cant find any info

By chance, do you know how to test the FPDM. I cant seem to find anything in my ford books on how to test the FPDM.

Some updates for the helpful folks that have been following...

I had a friend come over, he cycled the key while I listened for the fuel pump, from the passengers side I couldn't hear it, we tried twice, then I said well give it a shot, so he turned the truck over, it fired and idled as normal, about 5 seconds later it died.

I then...

borrowed a code reader and ran the codes. Here is what I got

Priority 1 = 0191 - Fuel rail pressure sensor range/performance
Priority 2 = the code never changed from 0191?
Priority 3 = 0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire

I will have to scan my ford books for how to diagnose the coil for cylinder 1 and the fuel pressure sensor....

I don't know if either of those codes mean YES your fuel psi sensor is broken or cylinder 1 coil is broken or plug etc...Would appreciate input if anyone has it :)

Cheers
Chris,

Also, I am wondering if folks might have some information on how I can electronically test my Fuel pump & FPDM.

Also, a link to a fuel pressure gauge that will work for my Sport Trac would be appriecated. I dont want to spend the $$$ that ford recommmends for the gauge to check pressure, I am sure a different one will work just as good, but I dont know the nessesary thread needed to hookup.

P.S. After the truck started for a few seconds, I went to the drivers side to listen for the fuel pump. I beleive I heard it, it only primed the line for maybe 1 second, it was extremly fast if in fact that was the fuel pump I could hear.

Recent update,

I pulled the Fuel Pump Driver Module FPDM. As usual from what I see its blown out on the aluminium side. There is about a 1" circular part of the housing missing, the exposed part of the electronics board is also black and it smells horrible, but that could be corrosion based.

Anyways, a new module is on order. I don't know yet if it is my problem and im not really interested in buying parts because they might fix the issue. But I pulled the FPDM due to always reading about how the corrode, so I wanted to see how mine was and replace it regardless if it was in bad shape, which it is.

I will keep everyone posted as to my findings once it is replaced.

P.S. Both 8mm bolts snapped removing the module. I wasnt to worried as its the module that is threaded not the chassis. When I pickup my module I will get new bolts

This is funny timing. Spent the last few months working on a similar issue on my son's Ranger. Same codes... fuel pressure sensor and cylinder one misfire. Word of experience, those codes are going to show up anytime the truck runs out of gas. Fuel pressure is low because their is no gas. Cylinder one misfired ... because their is no gas. Learned this lesson the hard way after throwing a bucket of parts at it. Final fixed it by replacing the fuel pump inertia switch. Little gadget all vehicles have that cuts the fuel pump off if the car gets in a wreck. Only way to reset it is to un plug it and plug it back in. It is in the passenger floor board area in the cabin on both the Ranger and my 07 ST.

Thanks for sharing your experiances! I am going to replace the driver module just due to its corrosion level. If the truck is still having issues, I will then trouble shoot the Inertia switch. Thanks again

Chris,

Just another update for everyone...

I put the new Dorman Fuel Pump Driver Module in today. My truck is running as it was before the break down. My module was in rough shape when it was removed and I was planning to replace it regardless if it was my main issue or not as it was in HORRIBLE shape...

I will look at making an article on how to change the Fuel Pump Driver Module for everyone. Even if your truck is working, you should really check it. The new unit came with rubber bumpers to move it about 1/2" off the mount plate which should hopefully stop future corrosion!

So to repeat.

The new FPDM started my truck up and its running good. Codes 0191 and 0301 were working with each other as a previous member stated. The module wasnt sending duty cycle information to the fuel pump, the fuel pump was then not sending fuel to the rail releasing code 0191. Because of no fuel, code 0301 was released, stating Cylinder 1 misfire.

Good info. Glad you got it going.
