Running out of Fuel

I was low on fuel and like the idiot I am I parked on the hill. Well I guess my fuel pump couldn't reach the little bit of fuel in the tank and I tried to start it a couple of times with no success. After I got my gas can and put more fuel in it, it started but there was a weird odor. Could I have hurt my fuel pump because it was "dry" when I tried to start my truck. Thanks, Chad

its possible, but doubtful... fuel pumps are not supposed to be run dry, but i doubt you did any real damage... in myexplorer, i ran out of gas probably 10 times,and it worked fine....
