Hello!

I had the serpentine belt and thermostat housing replaced in my 02 Explorer XLT. Recently there has been a power steering fluid leak and my mechanic stated that I needed to replace the rack and pin. I have yet to replace the rack and pin, but for the last two weeks I have heard what sounds like serpentine belt chirping but it occurs randomly and lasts no more than ten seconds when it does occur. I am scheduled to have the rack and pin replaced next week, in addition to an alignment.
Could this arbitrary chirping sound be associated with the power steering leak?

Thank you

I don't know if it would be related to the rack & pinion, but it could be related to the steering pump.

Which engine does your X have?

I have a 4.0 V6.

After having the rack and pin replaced, the chirping still persists.

Chirping is typically caused by the bearing on the tensioner or an idler pulley.

I would have to agree with the previous post. Not likely related to a leaking rack. Belt chirp may be related to a contaminated belt i.e. oil soaked or coolant. Or a dry or glazed belt.Next is a tensioner or pulley problem. The tensioner has to be able to move smoothly and not bind. The idler pulleys also should turn smoothly no roughness or play. Also check alternator, power steering pump, a/c compressor and water pump, and crank pulley. Significant thrust play can cause belt noise. In very rare cases i have seen engine thrust bearing wear out causing crank pulley to move in and out making the belt chirp.
