severe surging bad gas smell

I Have a 1994 xlt 4wd 4dr. 68000miles. Sometimes when I start it , it surges badly. The charcoal cannister smells like old gas kind of like varnish. When it is warm outside and you drive with the windows down you smell gas fumes. I am getting a purge valve code from the comp. Any help woud be appreciated. This is my first problem with the vehicle in over 4 yrs.

Surging is usually caused by vacuum leak..Check the lines on the intake and F.P.R. this would also explain the gas fumes..Also check all the lines going to and from the canister..Welcome to the site, there is alot of useful information within these pages..All you have to do is look..And again, sounds like vacuum..
