So I recently learned how to properly use a sewing machine. So, i'm thinking a decently easy project that i could make would be one of those soft cushy laptop case things, any advise or ideas on what i should use for material and softening material?

I'm sending a link to this thread to Zukman, or actually Mrs Zukman (Sue). She does a lot of sewing.

Your thread was renamed & moved into the Explorer lady's section. It should get more attention in this section than in the electronics section. Soft foam material is fragile, so I would suggest a durable edging around the sides. It's not really necessary but it will extend the life of the bag. You could use a second color for the edging to add to the style of the bag. Is the zipper on the top or around the entire bag?

Just on top, and are you saying to put a piping (like automotive seats) on the exterior? And thank you I didn't really know where to place the thread at.

The edging would go around the outer perimeter. This is the plan:

1. Sew the material around three sides (exclude the top where the zipper attaches).
2. Turn it inside out then use a roll of edging material to connect on the top of those three sides.
3. Turn it inside out again, and sew the zipper.
4. Turn it inside out again which is the correct position since it's now finished.

It's might be hard to get, but they make an edging attachment foot. It's not really necessary but it makes the job easier.

Check a local fabric store. By the way, what kind of sewing machine do you use? Don't set the stitch length too close, and leave the pressure foot set at medium. A medium needle would be fine too. A very thin needle might break while a thick needle is only used for thick, dense material such as heavy wool which is used for a coat.
