shaft fell out of tranny

i put another transmission in my 92 explorer 4x4 an it wont engage in any gear.
ive been thinking that i bought A bad transmission. then i just remembered when we where carrying it into my garage the shaft that slides in it an holds on the torque converter slid out. i put it back in no prob but i was wondering if something could of fell inside or something. an answer would greatly be appreciated thanks.

Its fine but as I remember, that shaft can only go in one way - but dont ask me which way cauz I dont remember the details

As long as the shaft is in there the right way, it should be fine. My thinking is it would be hard for anything to have really happened. You can look in Glacier's A4LD rebuild thread and somewhere it talks about which way that shaft is supposed to go in.
