Howdy Explorer Gurus,
This is my first post on this site although I have spent many hours perusing your sage wisdom. I am the original owner of a 96 Explorer 4x4 XLT with the 4.0L V-6, auto transmission with overdrive (4R44E/4R55E/5R55E?) that is my first question, what tranny, do I have? I would go look but it is in storage on the other side of the world.
I have been reading your posts about shift kits, I have 100K on my explorer and have done a fair amount of towing (across the US X2), I have never had any serious problems, some slippage that I fixed by tightening the bands (hopefully correctly) and I change the fluid on a regular basis.
Second question is the Trans Go or Superior the better kit and why?
Third question is it worth the time and money for a transmission that already has 100K on it?
Fourth question I was quoted $400 for installation of the TransGo kit, does this strike you as outrageously expensive?
Gracias,
Colt

Welcome to this forum! You have the 4R55E transmission. Each company has different parts in their shift kits. It's possible to combine kits in some cases. Usually people with a valve body issue install these kits when they are rebuilding the valve body anyway. You could install a kit on your own by following the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary.
