Shifter boot

The shifter boot on my 88 BII (5spd/4WD) needs to be reattached, but I haven't cracked the code for removing the knobs. I've been told to just put an adjustable wrench under the knob and hit it upward with a hammer, but that sounds too Model T for a proper fix. IS there a secret I'm missing?

That's what I always do, works fine.
