Should I replace the Slave Cylinder as well?

R

rock883

Ok, more than a year ago I got my clutch replaced and now it is bad already. Anyways, I already bought a Centerforce Dual friction clutch and the HD throout bearing that they recommend getting with the dual friction. Well, after I got the clutch replaced the slave cylinder went out, so I had to drop $600 when it could have been replaced with the clutch and saved about $500. Well, I was wondering, since the slave cylinder doesn't cost much, if I should replace it again? I don't know if these things wear out the same as the clutch, but do you guys think I should have it replaced while everyhting is out? I had it replaced exactly a year ago today. Where should I get it at? Any specific brand to get? How much will it be? Also, what is involved in resurfacing the flywheel? I am not doing this myself, but my friend's dad's mechanic is going to do it for me for less than $100. But, his dad owns a trucking company, and he is very experienced in working with big semis, I suspect he has any type of tool or knowledge to do everyhting, but I am just wondering what is required when resurfacing the flywheel. Thanks

Wow, I never thought I would pick a question that no one on this board could answer. No one knows any of this stuff?

uh

I'm not clear what youre saying..you have a Centerforce that went bad in a year and are replacing it, or you got a cheap clutch and are replacing it with the Centerforce?

Either way its sure a great idea to replace the throwout bearing and slave cylinder as well as any other tranny work (like drain and use new synthetic fluid) while youre on it anyway...that would go for any clutch, but it will probably benefit you in the long run to have all-new components...they will all wear from new, whereas if you replace just the clutch, like you said , something else like the slave cyl can go out then you wish you had just spent the extra bucks and saved the hassle. If you are putting in a Centerforce to replace a cheaper clutch, you will probably also see the most benefit from all new parts as well.

As far as resurfacing the flywheel, you just gotta make sure its smooth and even..if its too worn you'll need a new one..I would say if its even close to being worn, get a new one...if its lookin good then just get it resurfaced nice and smooth and youre set.

Yes, replace the slave now. Why risk it failing next week. As for the flywheel, unless you ran the clutch through the rivits (not likely) it can and should be be resurfaced.

Ok, I was saying that Goodyear put in a cheap (quality not price) clutch and it is going out now, a year after. Now I already have the centerforce sitting around, waiting for one of my friend's to tell me when his dad can do it for me. But see the thing is, I also had the slave cylinder replaced a year ago, and I just wanted to know if it really needed to be replaced since it isn't that old. But, if you guys really think it would be smart to go ahead and do it, then I trust you and will probably do it.

Now, how much do these things usually cost? The one that Goodyear put in was somewhere around $120 I think, but they always overcharge on things and they usually are cheap quality items, but are there any certain brands to get that are better than the others or something? Or are they all basically the same?

Also about the flywheel, what is involved in getting it resurfaced? How much would a new flywheel cost if I needed to get one, and where can I get one?

Ok, here's what I've got (for anyone that cares). The slave cylinder is about $80-90. I may go through carparts.com, since I found a $30 off any order $100 or more, and I can get a slave cylinder made by Raybestos for $83.99 if they follow through with their price guarantee they do now. Then I can get the clutch alignment tool, since I am guessing his dad won't have this. And I still have a few bucks to go until it gets to $100 so I can get the discount. There was a pilot bushing on there, and I have read about these things having problems with this and maybe I should just go ahead and get this as well? It is somehwere in the area of $10 or so. Well, I still have $4 left, maybe I can find something I need for cheap. Well, tell me if you guys think I should go ahead and replace the pilot bushing as well? Thanks to anyone that wants to help.

It is a must. Those things go out all the time. I just replaced mine for the 3rd time in the last 20K miles. Under warranty everytime, luckly. Every time, Ford had an updated part. Let's hope this last one is better!!

What have you had replaced the slave cylinder or the pilot bushing? That sucks that you've had to have it replaced so many times, although it is pretty good that it was under warranty and all. I ended up ordering the slave cylinder, clutch alignment tool, and a new thermostat (needed to get the amount to $100 to validate the coupon) for $80 with shipping in that total. Not too bad. I also ordered that special tool, which ended up being $15 with shipping. I bet that tool weighs less than 6 oz. and yet the shipping proce was $6, but I couldn't find it anywhere else that had online shopping. But, I sure will be glad once all this is in and going.

Clutch...

For the pilot bearing, YES, replace it since the price is low, on my 93 Escort I had to drop the tranny to see that only that stupid pilot bearing was out, replaced every thing since trans was down. For the slave cylinder cannot tel because when I did my 94 Explorer 1 1/2 year ago, I changed everything since it was the first time in 110,000 km. For the flywheel, it must be resurfaced every time you change clutch to get a good bond between the new parts(since the old clutch could have deformed your flywheel), a good machine shop charge 80$ CAN to do the job. Again for the slave, if the clutch pedal does not feel hard(or harder than usual) I would not change it, but then again depend on what it has been true in that year of labor, and how much a risk you want to take...

Ok I will go to AutoZone and see if I can get that pilot bearing. The slave cylinder, & alignment tool are supposed to be shipped by the 1st (pretty late if you ask me) but worth it for the extra $30 I got off the price. I don't know when the disonnect tool will be here, though. About the flywheel, should we just pull it off and while we are putting the slave in and the pilot bearing in we can take it somewhere, I am sure the guys knows someone who can do it for me. Maybe I should just go ahead and replace the flywheel while I am buying close to everyhting between the tranny and engine, :). I got a price from advance auto parts for $60 for the flywheel, and from the dealership I got a price of $250. $60 isn't too much, but I will just see how bad the current one is. Because the clutch is slipping a WHOLE lot, like whenever I put my foot on the gas sort of hard it slips. Then going from a stop it slips a lot and takes a while to stop and let me go. Oh well, I will be very happy once this whole deal is over and done with though.

The pilot bearing was replaced on every job, it is standard procedure.

Rock883, if your clutch is slipping, it definetly is a clutch problem (you need a new one), not a hydrolic problem, though I still recommend replacing the slave.

Oh I know its the clutch, but I was just trying to find out if I should replace the slave cylinder now instead of later. I will go out today and see if I can buy the pilot bearing. Man this just keeps on adding up. Thanks

well

just replace any and everything you can get your hands on...since your droppin the tranny anyway. Read around on here and you'll see... you wont be sorry you spent the extra $100-200 in parts. Any shop would/will probably charge $500+ just to take it out and put in the pilot bearing...you're getting an oppurtunity to have a sweet and smooth clutch, and free labor for it all...dont pass it up.

You can pay a little now...or a lot more later...:)

Well, I myself am not doing this whole project, my freind's dad is doing it. He owns a trucking company and he has mechanics that can do it and all the tools. But he is doing it for anywhere from $50-100, so its going to be cheap. But I ordered the pilot bearing at advance autoparts, and I may order the flywheel/flexplate.

Where does the pilot bearing go? I thought it went in the engine where the trans. input shaft went in, but it seems pretty small.

Pilot bearing...

The pilot bearing is in the center of the flywheel, it is small but it only guide the tranny shaft.

Ok, so I guess the picture in the Haynes manual iswrong or something. They show a pic in there and it has some sort of collar on the bearing and has a slot on the bottom of it to allow an internal puller to pull it out. But this bearing is just a small bearing with no slots or collar on it.
