I'm just getting started on my light upgrade project, but have done complete LED swaps on past vehicles. I know that some people have done very elaborate (AKA expensive) upgrades, but I was wondering if anyone had done a simple upgrade like this:

I want to swap the standard amber bulb in the rear light housing for a chrome dipped bulb that lights up amber, from autolumination. The point is to make the turn signal area look clear when not turned on, but still light up amber to stay street legal. IMO, it's a simple but effective option.

Your thoughts?

I like that idea. Lets see what the others say about this. I am kind of wanting to do something like this as well.

I used something like these for my rear turn signals: http://amzn.com/B00MC79TLA

I don't get the Egg Yolk effect anymore, its completely clear when off, Red when on, but they make amber ones as well. I modified the wires slightly to get both elements of the bulb to light up but wasn't much more than bending one of the wires over the other side and crossing them.

Towards the end of this video you can see what they look like

sobsmb - did you put in a resistor or is this without?

Nope, most new quality LED bulbs have the resistors already integrated into them. I simply removed the old bulb, put the new one in, and after flipping two of the wires to the other side to ensure all LED's on the bulb was on (you will see when you plug it in and test it,) I put it all back together. No resistors, soldering, crimping etc.

Right on, thanks!

I'm keeping my Amber as i prefer them over red but appreciate the feedback as I just got these http://r.ebay.com/Zi8fJ1

I had the same idea to keep amber color but not amber look. Well.....I ended up buying a red standard led bulb 7440. Look great, worked great, and didn't even have to use the load resistors.

I went for the brake light to turn signal mod.
Tried with a red LED in the turn signal housing, but the module gives a delayed signal when pressing the brake and using the turn signal at the same time. Making it sequential, which could be kind of cool. But since it's not sequential when only using the turn signal it looked kind of stupid. So I swapped it for a white LED and wired it to the back up lights.

That looks awesome!

So I kept the Amber flasher color in LED and think it works well. I am going to order bulbs for the front as well to complete the look.

Got rid of the amber color when not in use or as some have refered to it as the "Egg yolk" look

I can honestly say I like the way you have this done, but I just can't get the nerve to do this to my ex. Nice work though!

Wow, very nice! I really like the brake lights functioning as turn signals. I bet the dual reverse lights give you plenty of light when backing up in the dark now!

Yep, that's the look I'm going for. My "chrome" amber bulbs have arrived, but I'm waiting for some new reverse LEDs to be delivered before I install everything.

The LED Mod at the top is slick, I prefer the amber remaining but very nicely done!

you took the wire and flipped it to the other side?
